What exactly is the level of Irenicus? In BG1 manual Elminster is 29th level and some other pretty impressive stuff is said about him, so who do you think wwould win in a duel?

Elminster would kick ass! Sure, Irenicus has probably lived longer and because he has no emotions would have no problem casting his really big spells, but no way is he a higher mage then the big E. Heh, Elminster would probably cast Wish and wish for Irenicus to die on the spot. That'd be cool.

    BTW, welcome to the boards!

Elminster is Mystra's chosen. He'd just lay a pretty heavy smackdown of silver fire (read Elminster in Hell - or The Return of the Archwizards series to hear about silver fire, granddaddy of all spells) on poor Irenicus, instant fallen elf BarBQ.

[IMG] I'd say that both are being beat by the famous hero <Charname> who is a demigod and invincible anyway ... :p

Elminster would kill you no matter how many times you reload.
And he would also kill Irenicus without breaking a sweat. Irenicus is a whimp and Elminster is the badest fella in the game. It´s like putting up a regular squirrel against the Slayer.

Elminster, according to the manual, is a 29th level mage, and a 30th level cleric.

As a Mystra's Chosen (heehee) he is supposed to have 25 Constitution, but doesn't in the game. (For some reason.)

He also has the ability to ask Mystra for help, IIRC.

He is relitively low in level, but he's probably the equivalant to someone twice his level because of all the cool abilities. Not to mention that he could tell Khelban Blackstaff to get his staff over here and help him out.

    I doubt Storm has Teleportation.

But he's a Harper too, so he could get a friggin' legion over there quicker than butter on a hot sidewalk.

According to the game files, Irenicus is level 30 (although he doesn't have all the spells that he should).

Elminister is so ridiculously overpowered that he really shouldn't exist. He's tougher than most gods.

    Better duel: Elminister vs. Drizzt.

Yeah right, after half a second or so the duel would probably become Elminster vs a dual-acorn wielding squirrel. ;)

Elminster would demolish Irenicus and Drizzt.

    Drizzt would demolish Irenicus.

The only charecter that could challenge Elminster is Melichor Harpell. He comes if you are using Drizzt's weapons after the second battle against the Vampire Guild. But even he would eventually lose to Elminster.

    Abomination

Silver Fire isn't available in the game.

What about Arkanis before siding with Bodhi? No matter what, he wastes the PC in one swipe.

[IMG] Elminster could beat Drizzt in Melee probably. he'd just cast absolute imunity, Draw upon Holy Might, Improved haste and then Tensor's transformation. He would than proceed to use his magicaly enhanced, faster-then-the-fastest-undead-vampire and his stronger-than-superman- strength to send what's left, if any, of Drizzt's head right off his shoulders ;)

Edit: maybe someone can make a mod where all the legend's and hero's of the sword coast can go head on, in a deathmatch style battle.
Although Elminister would probably be unkillible short of attacking him with all the forgotten realm's hero's, world's armies Dragon's, Lich's, Drow and god know's what else.

[IMG] Let's stick to Elminster & Irenicus, shall we? Anything else: open a topic about it in the D&D or Booktalk forum, as it has little to do with BG2.

Elminster has skills in the fighter class, thief class, cleric class and mage class. He also has some measure of psionic ability as well. In addition to these, he is, as said, Mystra's chosen. This means that not only is he some ~2000+ years old during the "Time of Troubles" (which happened during or a short while after Charname was born) which would make him far older than Irenicus. He also has in his possession a series of spells and abilities that a normal mage of level 30 couldn't hope to master (to compare here, make a level 30 mage in BG and see if you can't solo Irenicus in your last battle against him... 30 is far more than your entire party combined can match at that phase of the game, and yet you can defeat Irenicus). Silver fire, as mentioned here, being just one (in short, it's the most powerful form of magic able to heal any wound or penetrate / disintegrate any other spell). He also has knowledge and lore unlike probably any other mortal on Faerún, and a number of friends who can be counted to be among the most powerful mortal beings on Faerún as well, next only to Elminster (some of which also are Mystra's chosen, meaning they too have the silver fire). One example here is the Simbul, who could probably wash the floors with Irenicus almost as easily as Elminster would.

As if this wasn't enough, Elminster in times of extreme need often receives personal help from goddess Mystra, and lord Azuth (god of Magic, and god of Spells).

As a conclusion, Elminster would be far, far more than Irenicus could handle even as an individual. And as a whole, he has so much more power to aid him that you can forget Irenicus right out of the equation. Irenicus may be an extremely powerful mage, one far more talented than most of the very talented ones on Faerún at the time. But Elminster is about the next best thing to a god.
