    One of the most gruesome stories of animal cruelty I've ever encountered.

    The background, the 2010 Winter Olympics ended, leading to a downturn in demand for sled dogs in the area afterwards:

    I don't think it comes out in that article, but the company tried to euthanize the dogs, but the veterinarian refused to, because they were still healthy.

    So their employee, Robert Fawcett, ended up using a different method. Holding them down, and either shooting them or slitting their throats. The subsequent investigation, which had to dig up a mass grave, concluded some of them took a long time to die, even after getting buried in the mass grave. The employee filed a workers compensation claim for post-traumatic stress afterwards, and sufficed to say faced a lot of stigma over things afterwards. No doubt.

    It still amazes me how many people fail to realize that there's unforeseen consequences in producing animals in mass quantities. Namely, what to do with them after the fact.. Not like you can just dump them into the waste bin like with most everything else.
