Which non-playable NPCs should have portraits?/ Suggestions

With all this talk of the portrait-pack for the non-playable NPCs, it is definitely something that I want to do or at least help to do.

Here is your chance to say which characters you think should be given portraits during their dialogues (like Irenicus, Elsime and Bodhi have) and also, if you have a particular portrait in mind, to make a suggestion for what could be used.

This has been done already for BG1 though I'm not sure by what pack *I think* it was the BG1 NPC-project, for the sake of continuity we'll use the SAME portraits for recurring characters who they gave portraits to (e.g. Volo, Tazok, Elminster).

 

Well I think practically all quest NPCs could use portraits.

-People who give you strobghold quests/instructions.
-Those NPCs vital in some quests, or those who give you the quests. Like Warren Windspear, his daughter, high merchant of Trademeet, Maevar, Kalah, Realis Shy, for examples.

Umm this basically covers all NPCs except common folk without names. Can you do it? What is the limit?

 

I think that ALL named NPCs is going a bit far - I was really just thinking about IMPORTANT NPCs... This is really what this thread is about, determining who exactly the "important" NPCs are.

From the ones you've mentioned here, I wouldn't exactly class Warren Windspear as important but I'd probably say that Lord Firkraag is.

As an experiment I'v been trying to give the genie right at the start of SoA, Aataqah, a portrait..

Here's what I've been trying:

The Weidu setup file is claiming it has installed...

However when I speak to Aataqah there is still no portrait in his dialogue. I've tried Grim Squeaker's suggestion of WRITE_ASCII PORTRAIT_SMALL "AataqahS" as well but the same thing happens... there is no portrait when I speak to him.

How can I get the portrait to show up??

 

Sometimes there is more than one .CRE file for certain creatures, e.g. Imoen has about 7 different files. You might need to add portraits to each of the .CRE files belonging to Aataqah if he has more than one file.

 

Why ask us? Why not go to the source? As in, people who have done this before like the ones who made G3's TutuTweaks. Surely they'd be better able to tell you what was wrong.

 

Make that one word. Seriously, no spaces in filenames.

Same as above. Get rid of the spaces in filenames (and the folders).

I'm thinking it might be due to an auto-save I've been working from (ie. it saved the area with unpatched aataqah already in it).

I'll go from a New Game tonight... if all goes well - should have a new mod-pack for you guys by next week

Still - need suggestions for who to do and what portraits... I want it to be definitive - a standard download, maybe even get it into one of the tweak-packs.

Hendak is the GOOD guy, the one you have to free from the slave fighting pit. Lehtinan is the evil owner of the CC, the guy that Hendak (if and when you release him) kills. Hendak takes over once Lehtinan's dead.

Ajantis is in BG2? Where abouts? I've never seen him before, and AFAIK, Anomen has a dialogue mentioning Ajantis being killed or something.

Ajantis is disguised as an ogre or something when you first go to Windspear. You actually kill him, if I'm not mistaken.

Another one I just thought of is the "good" silver dragon in the underdark (name escapes me) and, of course, Lord Fikraag.

re: Hendak - yeah, realised that later... both him and Lehtinana will get portraits.

 

I really did not know about that Ajantis thing...wow. Okay then, that's cool.

The silver dragon is called Avalon.

You could give Solaufein a portrait too, but that would have to be a separate component for those people who have the Solaufein mod installed.

 

I'm pleased to announce that I've finished this mod, (it is installing and working well) and now just need somewhere to host it (as my own website is temporarily down)...

Um, compatibility issues? Some of the characters you've mentioned already have portraits assigned in mods like TDD. WHat will happen there?

You can submit it to here. On the main page, click on "submissions" and take it from there.

About the compatibility stuff, you could write the people who have portraits from other mods into a separate installation component, so rather than "install all portraits?" it would be "install portraits for NPCs who don't get portraits from other mods?" and "install portraits for NPCs who do get portraits from other mods?". Then people with the other portrait mods could just select "no" for the second bit, and it should work.

 

It will simply overrwrite those portraits. Where possible I've tried to keep the same portraits as other mods (like for Sola and Valen)...

However - the *best* solution would be to install this before those mods and then install the other mods over it.
