OK, I keep hearing people referring to the +5 sword only usable by paladins. Well, where the heck is it? I've gone through almost the entire game at this point, and still haven't found it. It isn't one of those things in a random item list, is it? Where you may or may not get it? What's the scoop?

Isn't that Pale Justice? I haven't gotten it either, but at the moment I'm in Dragon's Eye so I'd hardly expect to. ;)

    EDIT:
Checked Simpson's walkthrough and it's on a corpse in Lower Dorn's Deep. Keep going. :)

Pale Justice is a +4 long sword -- +7 versus evil -- with some excellent immunities. Cha-ching!

Fel's correct, it's on a body in lower dorn's deep. One of the deep gnomes gives a hint that there's a paladin around -- well, there was. And he left his sword on his body. True to the old ways of AD&D, ONLY a paladin realizes it's a Holy Avenger -- it looks EXACTLY like a non-magical long sword to everyone else and merchants will only give a few gold for it.

When you're wandering around Lower Dorn you will be ambushed by some umber hulks. They'll come blasting through a wall. Kill them, go through the hole they made in the wall and search the body.

It is kinda hard to find. I was lucky enough to stumble upon it without using a walkthrough.

    Nice weapon!

You won't get it before chapter6.

I didn't find it in my party game since the fog of war doesn't dissolve as fast as it should there. You have to stand directly at the new opening.

It didn't matter much anyway, the game was easy enough and my party found 2 better longswords in HoW and TotL later.

Better than +7?!?!?! Granted the +7 bonus is only against evil, but I imagine the vast majority of things in the game are considered evil, right?

Yes, better. Not only +x is important.

yes like extra attacks, resistances, and other various goodies of the sort. The best part of pale justice is its immunities if you know you will be assulted by those spells.

The sword is nice and all, and if you're not in it for an overdose of tactics, use it if you can and stick to it.
Personally, i make my characters packmules, carrying all kinds of weapons/items for specific situations.

I've been playing the bioware games starting with BG1 (later bought it again, with the tosc expansion) and planescape torment.

Especially in Baldurs gate 1 you realize there are a lot of other things to look out for besides the +x amount on a weapon, simply because there is a big lack of weapons +3 and above.
Because of this, it was worth it seeking out items that gave extra stats, so i ended up picking up the longtooth dagger instead of a normal +2 one, getting Flametongue + 1 for it's fire damage, instead of a regular enchanted longsword, and especially bala's axe, i loved it to bits because of it's miscast magic attribute, worked charms on magic users, i wouldn't have traded it for a battle axe +5 even if i could have.

The second time i went even further by keeping weapons wich gave +x damage to some species, like the bastard sword +1 +4 vs. shapesifters, this causes a bit of realoading since you first need to see what you're up against, of course :D

All this experience came in real handy in Icewind Dale, since there are weapons that have a good +x And some nice other mods.
some examples of weapons you might want to pick up :

Battle axe +3 : Fatigue -20% chance of slowing a creature, don't pass up on this one.
Messenger of Sseth : Great bow, available relatively early in the game, this one fires insane fast. best one there is untill you get the +4 one in dorn's deep.
Spinesheath - Gives +5 Thaco, a dagger +x is useless if you can't hit with it, right ? settle for this one instead.
Staff of Nature's Wrath - better then the staffs available later in the game, because of its spell casting abilities, never underestimate a well placed entangle.

I hope that while in Chapter 1, you did the quest where you help a villager called Jhonin (or something like that) to understand his weird dreams.

    (Kinda spoiler ahead)

If you did, later on you'd get arguably the best sword in the game (other than Pale Justice, of course, but that one can used by anyone). And it can be improved during HoW.

Nothing as cool as toggling sneak attack on and have your thief sneaking attack with that one. Dozens of damage on a single strike.

You will be suprised that most enemies are not evil in the game. For some weird reason most undead, and lizardmen are neutral, that is, Holy Smite does not affect them which is a bummer and makes no sense to me. :(

Well, creatures without an intellect (animal intelligence or lower) simply cannot have an alignment because their thoughts are not that complex. This explains the undead (0 INT), if not the lizardmen. OTOH, lizardmen have a listed alignment in the MM of Neutral, with "Lizard King" listed as CE. "Theirs is not to reason why; theirs is but to do and die..."

You are right, I think. But I remember skeletons and most other undead were evil in BG2? Can you explain it?

BG2 has unbelievably screwy alignments. Irenicus being good and Elminster being evil kind of screwy. I wouldn't trust BG2 to tell me what time it was.

Perhaps the evil act of animating dead tainted the skeletons too? :o
