I am doing a little bit of "foreshadowing/powergaming here," and I want to know where to spend my proficiency slots.

On SP, some of the walkthroughs (like Simpson's) have item code lists, and there are also a few standalone lists in the Tips, Tricks & Hints subsection. Thne just get one of the BG2 item lists off SP, as most of them will also have all items from BG1, and compare.

    Melee Weapon advice:

You'll have to settle for +1 weapons for most of the game. Mostly +2 weapons are the best but there are a few +3 ones.

Some that are +2 or better:

Halbreds -only one +2/end of Chapter 5
Spears - nothing better than +1 but there is a +2 spear/staff in TotSC
Staffs - a +3 one can be bought in TofSC and as mentioned above +2 spear/staff in the Tower.
Axes - only one +2 (??? forget where because I've never needed it but I think it's late in the game)
Hammers/Maces - one +2 hammer on the crazy Cleric Bassilus, and a nice +2 mace can be found in Durlag's Tower.
Spiked weapons - Is there a +2 spiked weapon?
    2-Handed Swords - +2 Spider's-Bane in the Cloakwood and a +3 one in Durlag's Tower.
Bastard swords - No +2 one's but two nice +1/+4 vs shape changers.
Long swords - A +2 one can be gotten early from the bounty hunter around Nashkell. Some other nice +1 ones with special effects (fire damage and such) are around places.
Short swords - A +2 one can be gotten early from a thief in the wilderness a little west of the road south to Nashkell. A +3 one can be found in the very last part of the game.
Daggers - the best +2 one can be bought from the smithy in Beregost and another +2 one from a guy running from the undead in the southern wildness.

As you can see it's best not to have more than person in the party have one weapon type or someone won't be able to use a good one. Exceptions are the swords and blunt hammers/maces. Two can use them and each character will get to wield a nice weapon by games end.

+1 weapons you can get early:

+1 daggers and short swords are very commom and are all over the place. You can even get a +1 dagger in CandleKeep if your Charisma is high enough or you pickpocket it from the guy you get bolts for. You get a +1 short sword from Mulahey.

    +1 staff (Beregost/evil mage Silke)

+1 Halbred in a cave on the way to Gnoll Fortress.

+1 2-Handed Sword owned by a bandit (Ogre?) just off the road to Nashkell on the east side.

+1 Long swords: +1 Bastard sword can be taken at night from the smithy in Beregost (need good thief skills or knock spell).

I'm sure others can add more info... ;)

There is also a +3 cursed two-handed sword that makes you go berserk. It is wielded by Brage(sp?) in an area west of Nashekel. But, combined with Kiel's Helmet(Tower, TotSC) it can be awesome. THis way you can have two +3 two-handed swords(the other was mentioned by Aces)

ANother nice longsword is Flametongue. (It is +1, +2 vs. cold/fire using creatures, +3 vs. regenerating creatures and +4 vs. undead and it deals 1(I think) additonal fire damage.) It can be found in the Tower, TotSC.

A heavy crossbow of accuracy(Baldur's Gate) and the longbow of marksmanship(bandits' camp) are great ranged weapons.

Other really good items like a +3 sling, a +2 scimitar and a +2 throwing/returning axe can be found in Durlag's Tower, TotSC.

Or, if you like to be the bad guy, you can try to kill Drizzt. His scimitars(a +5 defending scimitar and a +3 one) are wonderful... just wonderful.

    That's all, I guess. :)

The flametounge is nice, but I like Greywolf's Long Sword +2 and the Spider's Bane. To get a lis of all possible items, try SP or PlanetBaldursGate.com.
