I just had to disconnect my old Vista/Win7 computer temporarily while cleaning and was noting that the speakers have both a 3.5MM jack to the audio out port, but also a USB connector that is used for power. The speakers are probably from 2008. The speakers do not work if either cable is unplugged.
Yet I also have a webcam that sends the sound from the microphone to the computer and only has a single USB connector.
I got the webcam used from Good Will over a decade ago, and it did not come with 64-bit drivers, I had to download those. I don't recall what year the webcam is from, but it's at least 15 years old.

Why wouldn't the speakers use USB? I had a temp job in 2021 replacing Win7 computers with Win10 computers and several of them had speakers that connected via USB. Laptop docking stations give the audio via USB.

That makes me ask, did USB audio only become generally supported with Windows 7? I just can't remember the years, and I've done some quick Google searches and can't find anything about the years for USB audio. I can find info about it in general, but no dates.
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong websites, but I find that really odd.
So, when did USB speakers become available?
