I assume you mean if you´re going solo, cuz if you have a party it doesn´t really matter...

I have played VERY little with bards, but my bet would be on them since they are a "Jack of all Trades". I think it would be easier to beat the game with a "pure-class" if you understand what I mean.

I would have to say druids.

Druids only really hit their stride at higher levels. In the Icewind Dale games, Druids kick major ass. But the BG series gives Druids precious few good spells. Clerics, at the very least, can compete by wearing heavier armor & shilds and have access to better weapons. Unless you kill Drizzt and take his scimitars, which would be nigh impossible for a low-level druid IMO, there really aren't any good weapons a Druid can count on in the game. The best weapon druids have at their disposal is the ability to turn into a bear, and like I said, you can't count on that till much later on in the game.

I meant in a party. I have no desire to play the game solo.

I found a mage the hardest, but that is more down to playing style. I like my character up-front so my mage tended not to last very long.

Fighter was really easy as you just run in and stomp on things (also Pally and Ranger) plus you party doesn't matter too much.

I have tried dual-classing several times F>T and F>D, but failed miserably. Got to L7 both times, but you go back to 20 THAC0 and poor armor for ages and keep getting killed because up until then you've been used to just running in and killing things.

My 3 best games have been with:
    1) Bard - Minsc,Jaheira,Viconia,Imoen,Edwin
    2) Druid - Minsc,Jaheira,Skie,Imoen,Eldoth
    3) M/T - Kagain,SharteelViccy,Faldorn,Garrick

These are all meant to be hard classes to play with, but I just found that if you use the right party and play to the classes strengths then they can all be done.

Bard was just great fun. Use longbows for 2 attacks, chainmail when not casting and support your party when needed.

Druid is awkward because of lack of weapons, but use Small Swords (Dagger+2), Large Swords (Drizzts Scimitar+3 - pickpocketed by Garrick) and Darts (3 attacks - stunning are best). Don't forget you can use the Ankheg armor.

M/T is a pain because you can only have one quick weapon, so you really have to plan any back-stabbing ahead of time.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that it is all down to your style of play and the party you choose to go along with you.

With or without a party low level Bards suck.

I'd picked up Imoen, I had a +1 ring the best armour I could get, I was heading to pick up Xar and Monty to get me to the Inn and an Xvart killed me with one hit.

Yesh sir, the bards may be good at upper levels, but a first level bard is only slightly above a pin cushion

You can say that about any non-fighter character. Because you can't get where a helmet you are prone to thise critical hits.

A lot of the early parts of the game are down to luck. I have had many occasions where my Bard would kill the mage at the FAI really easily and my Ranger would miss and then have horror cast on him and die from magic missiles.

I think all level 1 characters are prone to troubles in this game. The fighter has the best chance of survivial through level 1, but the thief/bard starts catching up pretty quickly as they hit L2 at 1250XP (around Bereghost) and you then have the HP buffer to keep you alive.

Remember, bards are as good as archers as thieves. They can wear better armor when not casting magic. They can also use wands and the wand of lightning (available in Bereghost) is a god-send so your bard could use this early on, as well as casting spells from memory or scrolls.
