so i finally get the earth golem spell. Aerie casts it. it just stands there as if it were waiting to be talked to. it didn't fight even when attacked. am i missing something here? what went wrong?

I'm guessing you mean the mage spell "summon earth elemental". After you cast it, there is a wait time while the caster supposedly tries to gain control of it. Both the caster (Aerie in your case) and the elemental will appear with blue circles under them.

If the caster wins control, both will have green circles under them and you gain control of them. If not, you regain control of the caster but the elemental goes hostile and you must kill it (no XP though).

This is the same for fire and air elementals, as well as their lesser counterparts.

Note that the priest version of the spell does NOT have this wait time; the elemental is immediately under your control.

No. Basically, elemental summoning is worthless for mages. The wait is far too long, there are better things for your spell slots, and at the end of it all you get a weak critter to fight for you.

Shame only Druids can cast them...(NO clerics sorry.)

After trying these, I've completely abandoned using summons that need a mental contest. It just takes too long to get them to work for you.

And with my luck, I usually go from the frying pan into to fire when I cast one of these!

The druid's great Bears which can be summoned are IMO the best... so powerful that I stopped using them.
Skeleton warriors are the best friends a Cleric can have. ;)

Really Caradhras? I saw "bears" and thought that the spell would be underpowered. I've got to try that one out!

If you have the Mod 'Shapeshifters Rebalancing' then those bears are even more poweful, to the point of being a complete joke! They regenerate VERY fast and are quite deadly. Though I have LOTS of other modes to enhance enemies VASTLY, so it does NOT unbalance my game, it is just a LITTLE relief.

I don't like that, Silverstar. If I want to summon bears, I want bears, not mutant regenerating bears!

@Klorox: try the "plain" version, it's really powerful (I don't use the shapeshifter rebalancing mod) and Jaheira can cast it soon enough. ;)

You are right to disregard them, BUT I play BOTH tactics and improved battles modes, and even then they can DIE pretty fast!

Remember battling Master Brain in INSANE difficulty. It summoned 4 Alhoons (a spellcaster MindFlayer, undispellable invisibility, lots of Protection from mgc weapons and stoneskins, plus all new psychic powers due to improved mflayers. They can see invisible too.), plus Adamantite golem, Other lesser golems AND a magic golem. Plus brain CONTINOUSLY casted Greater Malison AND chaos and even mazed my PC by a ranged spell. The bears REALLY helped in that battle, abd DIED. (no suprise) Our fighters died TOO, rod of ressurection came in handy.
