GamerGod has endeavoured to find out what players think of D&D. Here's an excerpt from the first one surveyed:

Osprey: As a pen and paper D&D enthusiast, how faithful do you think DDO is to the tabletop game?

Espri: I think the devs have been fair to keep the original intent intact. My PnP group of 5 have all had a chance to play BETA and concur that the proof will be in the final release. We have changed the rules as a group with a few tweaks (in the past), and it looks like most of the tweaks the devs have implemented are for playability of the game.

The stat generator allows you to make an average to above average adventurer (according to PnP), and these have to be balanced in the pickup groups (or you can't finish a quest). For instance, intelligence of 16 on a wizard who multi-classed will only be able to complete (quests) with the right potion at low level and spells at higher levels.

So, even without poles to climb, no grapple hooks to help you scale a wall, and the missing orcs massing at the gates and causing trouble, it seems close to what we expect. The creatures encountered so far are close to monster manual stats, just needs a few more imports of animal encounters, leopards/wolverines/giant weasels/ etc.

I’m not familiar with the Eberron setting, and it poses a few changes with the use of airships and land transport that you actually never get to see move around.
