What do you think of Fighter/Mages?

Fighter/Mages can be good, although i haven't used one since BG. a F/M can use a large shield and still cast spells, which helps, even more if you get a good magic shield. they also can use a composite long bow in case you run out of spells.

i never finished my game with a F/M, i did't like using him.

they're pretty good as long as you have good dexterity to add to your AC. i also like the fact that they can use a bow instead of only a dagger or quarter staff. it gives them a better chance to fight back, along with the added bonus of fighting back from a distance. you shoul always have a backup weapon to back up a bow, though, as they don't do too much good at a close range.

I quite like fighter mages, they're a versatile character option and my only problem in BG was the lack of Elven chain in the game so that a F/M could wear it and still cast spells. Apparently there's a set in BG2.

[IMG] IMHO, a dual classed fighter/mage is practically the best char you can have in BG. Dualed at level 5, you have tons of HPs, master in bow or sword, but still get ALL the spells available in BG...
    He just rocks !
Mirror Image, Haste and then Full Plate Mail and a hughe Long Sword... SAMBA ! :D

[IMG] Best character ever! Weapons and magic, it doesn't get better than that! Bludgeon them with a war hammer then finish them off with a spell! Hahahahahahahaha! :D

    I made a Gnome Fighter/Illusionist in BG.
He was an excellent character to have, and he allowed me to have 5 fighters in my party with me:
    Ajantis, Kirvan, Coran, Minsc, Yeslick.

Of course, I stole the Defender sword from Drizzt, and that made it a bit easier, but really you can do without it and just wear Robes of the Archmagi and a shield.

    Cheers!

Lord Bane, why not train your fighter to lvl 7 before dual-classing him? That way, you get an extra 1/2 attack each round. Unless, of course, the exp requirements are too high...

  11. I started my character as a human fighter, then dualled him to a conjurer once he hit level 3. Since he stopped being a fighter, after a while he couldn't do too much in melee. But I didn't have to worry about him dying in combat due to his high HP, and he had a good carrying ability. Every stat except WIS was at or near max, I got a killer roll on that one!

I think it might be more effective though, if you do it as a split class, then you can raise both classes. The drawback is your char will go up more slowly, but you can just use them as a fighter until they get the better spells.

[IMG] I played an elven fighter-mage first time through BG, with maxed out dexterity so I made more like an archer-mage out of him. Nobody compared, especially with bracers of archery. Arrows of piercing? Bye-bye Sarevok!
Bows were definately overpowered in BG. They're going to be ineffective at close range of course. It was a bit of a munchkin character.
In Icewind Dale I dual-classed a 9th level fighter to a specialist mage. 150 hp's or so, with tons of spells. He was DEFINATELY munchkin!
Mirror image, blur, improved invisibility, stoneskin AND haste?? With field plate, +3 shield, +2 helm, and +2 defender etc... yuck!!
Hurt? Use a vampiric touch spell to heal 5d6 damage. :D
