What armors allow Spellcasting?

mage spellcasting, I mean.

I'm playing a gnome F/I, and I wanted to know what I had to look forward to.

 

Any and all elven chain mail available in the game will allow you to cast spells while wearing armor.

If your a bard, you can find the Melodic Chain +3 the Astral Prison. You can also find a normal plain elven chain in Trademeet, from Lord Alibakkar.

Much later in the game, you get the Bladesinger Chain +4 in Suldenesselar, which you can upgrade to the Aslyferund Elven Chain +5 in ToB...as far as armor goes, thats it. If you want, you can try the excellent Robe Of Vecna when you are heavy on spells, but otherwise you can stick to the armors when you are in combat...

Robes, Elven chain and drow chainmail but you can only wear that in the underdark. Robe of Venca as mentioned is the most powerful armor for any spellcaster (at least in my opinion) offering a reduction of 5 to spellcasting times. Aslyferund's Elven Chain has a nice AC (0) however is better given to another party member (Imoen, Aerie, Nalia, Jan, H'd) due to the invincibility to normal weapons it bestows (as your PC will already be invincible to +1 and less from the tear quests).

 

Oh, so Elven Chain will work on a Gnome?

If so, that's really cool.

 

There are no racial restrictions on elven armor; the "elven" refers to its creators.

Where can one get the Robe Of Vecna? I have never heard of it before.

 

The Robe of Vecna is available from Diedre in the Adventurer's Mart, along with some other nifty items. The Robe of Vecna is extremely powerful (AC 5 and decreases casting speed by 4) and definitely the best mage robe in the game, barring mods.

edit: I guess I should add that Diedre was part of the bonus merchants, but she should be added by the latest ToB patch.

 

Patch doesn't add bunos merchants: you must download them and put the files manually in your override folder.

Also, you can whack Drizzt and take his "Mithril Chainmal +4". Easier said than done...

 

I should have clarified; the official ToB patch adds Diedre, though why it doesn't include Joluv is a mystery.

 

Correction Daephon... Drizzts Mithril Chainmail +4 does NOT allow spellcasting while wearing it...go for the Robe of Vecna...

A stoneskin put up instantly is more useful than probability of less hits, as in the period you take 0 hits, you can unleash a lot of destruction which eliminates all your enemies anyway...

Lets see... Stoneskin+Mirror Image+Fireshield Red...( the last two arent possible without the stoneskin) should pretty much make you invulnerable to combat, while you unload like... 3 or 4 skulltraps/sunfires/abi dalzims depending on your level... fun stuff eh?

 

By the way, how much does Robe of Vecna cost when having about average reputation. I played evil party having rep 1, and i had to pay 270 000 gold for it. First time I played this, I thought 20 000 for Gaelan Bayle was much.

 

The base price (before Charisma bonuses and rep) is 20,000 gold.

 

Valygar's family armor allows spellcasting. If you have a multi class mage/thief you could use it once you have 'use any item' ability.

 

That 20k base price is misleading, though. That's what the value in the item description is, but you fail to take into account the markup on the store.

AFAIK, the absolute lowest price for the Robe of Vecna is 25k gold.

 

And of course, the most typical armors for a mage are bracers of defense. You can get AC 3 from Ribald. I think the robe of the apprenti is supposed to offer AC 3 as well, though I have never gotten it. If you're into cheating, just get the +5 drow chain in the underdark, then smuggle it out of the areas that check for it in your inventory by using the old fire brigade hand-off trick.

 

Are you sure the Corthala family armour allows spell casting? If you're basing this assumption on the fact that the stalker gets mage spells, you're wrong as they're casted as if they are druidic. So are you sure you can cast mage spells with Valygar's armour on??

 

Thyorna's correct; Valygar's armor does prevent mage spellcasting.

Yes, I´m sure of it. I have tried it myself and it works quite well, however you need 14 wis for this to work. A potion of insight should help.

 

I've tracked down the discrepancy; you must not have Baldurdash instaled. Baldurdash fixes some bugs with the armor, including the spellcasting.
