[IMG] What are the highlights - as in places to see, places to do things, or just cool places/things, in your town/village or, if you live in a particularly large town or a city then just in the area around where you live. Feel free to post the name of the town/village/part of city where you live but it's not compulsory.

    Ok I'll start -

In my town (Tonbridge) there is a Castle, that's the main 'highlight' lol.

Hope others can provide something more exciting.

On the North Shore, there are old gun emplacements in the cliffs looking out to sea. They were built some time in the early 20th century because we were worried that the Japanese were going to come and invade New Zealand. After the end of World War II, the gun turrets were abandoned so now kids can go and explore and play in them.

Hang on, I've just given away the fact that NZ now has no military defence system against a seaborne invasion! Aaaaargh! Hope nobody evil is reading this and decides to invade us. :mommy:

Well the city that I live in has a lot of park space but nothing really interesting.

We are a suburb of Toronto which has the CN Tower, a fairly large zoo, a museum with excellent Dinosaur and Egyptian exhibits, and a decent theatre district.

There is a 12th century central tower of an old fortress in the centre of my little city. It tends to be the symbol for Helsingborg. We also have a royal garden which is kinda nice.

JSBB - every time I have been to Toronto, it has been far too cold to go to the zoo. But I have been up the CN Tower a couple of times. We even got dinner at the top of tower as one of our wedding presents!

Actually the winter is probably the best time to go to the Toronto Zoo. You can rent cross country skis and ski around the Zoo. Not all of the animals are outside in the snow but it is pretty cool - figuratively and literally. ;)

Oh - I thought almost all outdoor attractions in Toronto were closed during the winter. Guess I missed out then. Maybe next time.

The highlight of Alingsås? Me, of course. :D

Actually, there is no highlights of Alingsås. The closest thing is the statue of Jonas Alströmer, the man who brought potatoes into Sweden. Great deed, isn't it? It's not like if someone else would do it the next week or so if he wouldn't. ;)

Los Angeles is, of course, a world unto itself. My little zone of it, Tarzana, used to have the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate, but it's been developed. Now, it's all just suburbia (couple of nice golf courses though).

My hometown of Toronto, as JSSB has said, has some fun places to visit.

There's also Casa Loma, a small castle in the city.

Warsaw. The Lazienki (i.e. Baths) Park is one of my favourite places. The Old Town, I guess. Near to where I live, there are remnants of an early-mediaeval keep. We have lots of baroque churches and maybe two gothic ones. I'm quite sure a tourist guide would have different highlights, though.

Well I was in Warsaw on a tour last month and I just happen to have my guidebook right here so I can confirm that the Lazienki Park and Old Town are indeed the top two attractions listed, The Royal Castle, assorted churches, Palace of Culture and Science, and the Ghetto Monument round out the second tier.

Apart from the food (which was heavenly after having been in Russia for the eight days before that) I would have to say that the highlight of my stay was a Chopin recital that I went to. It was held in a small but beautiful palace in Lazienki Park and I absolutely loved it.

On a more close to home note - I have lived just outside of Toronto for just over twenty years now and I have never even seen Casa Loma let alone been inside it. It is always kind of amusing to realize how common it is for people to have never been to their own local attractions.

Hrm, imo we don't really have much to boast of in the city areas of the Philippines in the way of tourist attractions  but as we're an archipelago, we've got dozens of awesome beaches :) most notably and most popularly, Boracay. Getting a bit too commercial for my taste though...

There's this big fricking tower in the middle of our city. That's about it. Oh, and our city has been built on about 37 (maybe more) dormant volcanoes. So if we get hit by a major earthquake there'll probably be hell to pay.

We have a lot of trees. A lot of trees. So we have a large statue (formerly wood but now metal that looks like wood) called Mr P.G.

The city dresses him up for all city related occasions, such as large sunglasses for 'Blind Awareness Week'.

Oh yeah, we also have a lot of trees.

Finland doesn't have a whole lot of highlights in general. I guess the "castle of Finland" or "Finnish castle" (whatever it would be in English) is the only real highlight in Helsinki. Then there's the museums and theaters etc of course.

Here in Ituzaingo, that's in north Argentina, there is this central hidrolectrica (Hydroelectric Power Dam), turists come here from all over the world, is the second largest, the tour they give you, takes you from esclusas (the thing like the Panama Channel is) to the botton of a generator, where you see how actually electricity is made. I worked there for 5 years. That's the only thing we have in my town, but if we go few km up, we get to know Iguazu falls, the most beautiful thing in the world to see, not just to see some water falling but for the park also, with millions of birds species and 15 kind of tigers (to say something similar). Anyway, too much advertising ;)
