Why are thieves so populous? Have been roving through mod sites and there is a lot that are aimed at the Thieves and Rogues. Why are they so popular?

Is it the versatility? The settings in games making them seem so much more powerful or cool? Is it the everyman view that they give? Warriors are often viewed as melee machines, clerics as pious healers, mages as usually somehow deranged, thieves have a more 'casual' look to them, a padfoot and a master assassin have the same root and the same variety. But does class limit versatility?

2nd edition limited races and classes in their class combinations, a mold readily broken in 3rd edition much to my personal rejoicing. Yet NPCs in games bend the rules already, statwise some are illegal in the BG series, or have extra abilities, a class combination not usually allowed, special items or contradictory personalities to their class.

Thieves and Fighters in 2nd ed were open to all basic races, yet fighters have a sense of dedication applied to them, is it possible to be a casual expert with a blade? An epic archer in your spare time? A specialised halberdier... naturally?

A thief however, anyone can be driven to picking pockets and burglary to survive, though not necessarily to kill another person, just for a bit of money. Is a first kill more personal and tragic to a thief than a warrior? Is a mage with her alien power distanced from the mundane reality of death? Does a cleric with conviction in belief find a heretics' death easy to justify?

Is it easier to accept a thief can 'just happen' while affinities with gods, magic or martial arts infer a level of personal imbalance and potential vendetta? (Valygar vs Mages, Leliana has visions which can lead to some people thinking she is imbalanced (she is not a cleric though, just picking a typical ideal))

Is a dedicated thief more distasteful as a result? Someone who is devoted to liberating the wealth and lives of others for personal gain as opposed to a rapscallion who happens to steal from those who seem to be able to afford it. (Dark Assassin vs Kender?)(Kender are utter prats though, let's be honest here.)

What is the driving force of a thief? It seems to be more personal - fighters have a personal aspect but it's generally with a martial edge with improvement of physical power, Clerics are driven by faith, mages by otherworldly power and knowledge. Thieves have such a gamut of abilities and temprements that anything from immortality to saving a loved one from jail could be peppering their lifetime goals along with "just surviving."

Are thieves the more diverse quarter of the standard four-way classes?
