Very stupid idea

[IMG] I have just had what is probably one of the stupidest ideas for a game that I could possibly have thought of, but I'd still like to know if it could actually work. The basic premise is of a CE character made that way because everyone will not stop insulting him. The reason they won't stop: it's his name. That's right, I'm going to put an insult in as the character's name. :shake:

This means that anyone who uses the character's name will die after the dialogue finishes. Which means this will be mostly solo; I'll take characters as long as I can, but as soon as they invoke "The Name", they will die. Because of this, I do not believe I will be overburdened by companions at any point, and I'll probably have to spread them out. I figured I'd go with a halfling F/T for the stabby factor and the Belkar-ness.

My question is this: Could you even conceivably play this way without breaking the game? What plot-required NPCs actually use the protagonist's name, and is there any way that you would only have to talk to those who do once?

The answer: Yes, as far as I can determine. Gaelan can be bought at first conversation for 20K, or you could ignore his mention of your name by telling him he was mistaken (surely he wasn't referring to you ;) ). Unfortunately, Aran Linvail uses your name in ordering you to go after Bodhi, so that avenue is closed off, and you may as well just kill Gaelan. OTOH, Bodhi only uses your name in the final conversation before shipping you off to Spellhold. And she'll get hers later anyway. Past that, you can just carve your way to the end of SoA. You will have to attack the "Coordinator" when you enter Spellhold with the wardstone (you can't go to Desharik since you're required to introduce yourself), but it'll just trigger the sleeping potion and things will go from there.

In ToB, Sarevok can be given a piece of your soul in the very first conversation and then killed. Melissan is trickier, but fortunately, she just leaves if you attack her in Saradush. After that, it's carve, carve, carve, carve your way through ToB.

Now, have I missed anything? Is there anyone else that for some reason or another you absolutely can't kill that should have its dialogue checked?

Does Elhan (or whatever his name is, the elf you talk to after the Underdark) invoke your name at any point?

    [IMG] That's a crazy idea! Absolutely great§ :D
But it's going to be very hard to pull it off...

I like this too, of course you could always use SK to create a Halfling Stalker which would be closer to Belkar Bitterleaf. :)
[EDIT: I completely forgot that Rangers had to be good in BG2... Barbarian would be fun though.]

It's so silly I might give it a try myself, starting with tutu (there goes Imoen!!!!)

[EDIT: perhaps a "short joke" as a name would work as well? What about "Shorty"...]

Not very stupid idea, I love lots and lots of mods and you like creating interesting PC ideas, Fel. I see nothing wrong with it, enjoy and tell us how it goes! :thumb: I love it Belkar!

Having slept on it, I had decided to go instead with something Belkar said. Meet Stabby, the eighth dwarf:

    Stabby, AKA [censored] :shake:
    Dwarven male
    CE Fighter/Thief

    BG1 (BG2)
    STR 18/98 (19)
    DEX 17 (18)
    CON 19 (20)
    INT 10 (11)
    WIS 10 (13)
    CHA 16 (17)

    @henkie:
:wail: Crap, there goes my plan. Elhan calls you by name at the very end of your first conversation, no matter what. (Which is rather odd, since you never tell him. ) "All speed to you, <CHARNAME>." He also calls you by name in the second conversation before heading out with the Lanthorn, so even then I'd have to kill him in the city. I'll look for ways around this, but I don't see any way short of getting in without him, which may prove impossible.

Coolness, I can only imagine the Censored part.

Oh never mind Elhan, if you can manage to play to that point like this that would be quite a feat!

Well, we won't know until we try, right? Maybe he'll teleport out or something, or maybe he can't be killed because a script is triggered. Who knows?

Really? I never knew this. Of course, I don't think I ever had 20,000 gp prior to leaving Waukeen's Promenade, although it is more than possible with the steal/sell technique and all the available merchants. How does the dialog chance if you already HAVE adequate funds when you first meet him.

I do. I've examined his entire dialogue tree. With Viconia, without Viconia, every possible dialogue chioce...they all end with that line. I've also found out that if you attack him someone comes along with a Timestop and (scripted) auto-kill. I'm still going to do it (eventually), but the saga of Stabby (I plan to tell you guys who I had to kill and who I didn't) will stop at Elhan. A sad ending for a sad, sad little dwarf.
It just changes your possible responses. Instead of "I don't have that much money...how am I supposed to raise such a fare?", you get "Very well, here it is." You pay the 20K, he gives you the key, and you get to skip straight to Chapter 3.

Well, I LOVE your idea, Fel, and look forward to hearing about your encounters.

Hmmm...you could make it through the entire underdark without killing anyone, couldn't you? Does Adalon call you by your real name? I can't recall.

Only if you choose the second option for your first response and you're on good terms with the gnomes (didn't kill the one guy's son, and helped them with the Balor). That's a shame, though; I was really hoping to kill her. Yeah, I'll probably be able to make it through the Underdark as everyone will be calling me Veldrin. Damn. I really wanted to skewer that silver and all the gnomes. :p

    EDIT: typo

Hey, you might try to "kill" Elhan in Suldanesselar by turning him to stone with Wand of Wonder. I'm thinking that this might work, since Petrification with the wand doesn't turn the petrified hostile. At least not with the Watcher's Keep dragon.

Stabby'll just have to keep his rage in control, brooding, looking for the perfect situation when Elhan's not protected by the elven army of Suldanesselar.

Then you could try to charm Elhan, summon some monsters, and turn them hostile, then hide. They'll attack Elhan! And if he's petrified, he'll be killed, defenceless!

Try it! It might work! I'll try it!

He's not that subtle (he's called "Stabby" for a reason :p ), and he most certainly would not wait for Suldanesselar. I'm not going to metagame just to get around a problem.

Found out that there's no way of killing Elhan when you come out from the Underdark if you plan on doing only physical damage.

I gave him a good thrashing and he was just almost dead. Repeated backstabs, doing something round 200 hp worth damage didn't topple him.

This doesn't look good for Stabby.

And the petrification didn't work either. But I found a way to dispose him. I'll post a pic from that since a picture might tell more than a thousand words.

    A little off topic:
Try playing as the Night N' Gale or what ever his name is. Your best bet for that would be a totally insain evil human assassin. With points in Single weapon style and dagger.

I'll try posting it tomorrow...Might not live up to your expectations though...

edit: I'll be able to post it next week, since I'm having technical difficulties... :o
