    ok this quest is kicking my ass. I have tried the spells in every possible sequence. After I did that I checked a walkthough that told me the order..one I had already tried. I have tried casting them on the same side as the tablet of (fire from by the fire tablet, etc.) except for the sever magic which you have to touch the pillar for, tried different timings etc. nothing works. any suggestions?

    btw this the the third mages guild quest...not for the recommendations

    Are you using the correct spells? The scrolls needed are located in a crate next to the mage (forgot his name, but he is in the next room).
    Maybe you need to talk with the mage to get into the next part of the script.
    I haven't had any problems with the pillar, when I read the tablets and the book I knew that one of the spells is the "Weak Fireball", I immediately threw it at the central pillar and the stones started moving.

    yea I took all the spells out of the chest and used those. I made another character and got to that point and it worked fine so my guess is that it glitched =/
