I'm worried I screwed something up.

I installed the following mods in this order:

    1) SoA patch
    2) Preorder Bonus Merchants
    3) That mod which lets you skip the first dungeon.
    4) Throne of Bhaal
    5) TOB patch
    5) ToB Fixpack
    6) Torment of Souls 605 (Kachiko and Yoshimo etc.)
    7) Ascension 1.4.12
    8) Redemption 1.2

Something messed up the mod which lets you skip the first dungeon (I assume it was Torment of Souls) but that's fine since I went though it no prob.)

Anyway, I got through the early sections no trouble. I have Jaheira (whom I intend to dump in favor of Mazzy), Keldorn, Yoshimo, Kachiko, Aerie, and myself, Swashbuckler -> Mage.

We're currently in Umar Hills. Yoshimo has had two interlude speeches with Kachiko. I have had two romance speeches with Jaheira (I am soooo dumping her.) I triggered the Valygar and Beholder Cult quests, but haven't done anything in either.

After getting the note from Mazzy Fenton in the ranger's cabin, we're ready to head to the hidden temple. Every time I do so, the game crashes just after loading the new area. I have no chance to avoid the crash.

    Any help?

    You should Install:
    SoA Game
    ToB Game
    ToB Official Patch
    Balderdash Fixpack
    One non-weidu mod
    Any weidu mods you want

If you do it in any other order, you will have bugs and crashes. And you don't need the SoA Patch if you have the ToB patch

I installed the SoA patch before I decided to go ahead and put ToBhaal in.

Torment of SOuls wanted me to put on the Fixpack, so I did. I did not, however, install its special animations (it more or less said I could skip them).

I can re-install everything, but I was hopiong someone might know what was going on.

Yeah, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do...

Perhaps, if you keep your save files (from the folder: save), then after you reinstall, you could put them into the folder, and voilah! Although, I'm not sure if you can do that without the old game data crashing the game.

In this case, the install order might not be the culprit. I experienced the same crash with Tortured Souls...a little research turned up this thread with the answer:

    http://forums.blackwyrmlair.net/index.php?s=9741db0d4d46d32f37410d32a4f30014&showtopic=1347

I was able to fix the problem with Near Infinity, and I'm a computer retard, so hopefully, you'll be able to do the same. :)

However, EVERY Read Me out there says to install any mod AFTER installing SOA, TOB, and the BD fixpack, so, to save yourself some trouble down the road, you might want to uninstall them all now and do a reinstall. And make SURE you follow the instructions in the Tortured Souls Read Me and back up your Diag file...see my lament in the Bad Foggy Spell Graphics thread about what can happen if you don't. :(

So, I need to uninstall everything (except the saves), reinstall in the right order (though I think I had the order correct anyway) except...

I don't want Near Infinity. Do I install the Tortured Souls animations section? That fixes the problem, right? Or do I have to have Near Infinity to fix the problem?

    What is Near Infinity, anyway?

Be careful of putting old saves into a new install, though. Things could get messed up. If you aren't too far, I'd say restart the entire thing after reinstalling. And the order I gave you is the correct one, IIRC. I don't know about Tortured Souls, though, so perhaps I am wrong.

    @smilingbandit:

Near Infinity is an Infinity Engine (the program that BG runs on) editor...modders use it to create characters and items, among other things. You can modify charcter files with it, and, in this case, that's what you'd need to do to fix this bug. Somehow, the Shade Lord file got changed in the TS mod, and it causes a conflict with the rest of the data for the Temple Ruins area. So, the game crashes when you try to go there. All you have to do is find the right file for the Shade Lord, and change it with Near Infinity, following the directions in the link I posted above, AND the instructions on the Near Infinity site. It's really not all that complicated (like I said, if I can do, anyone can!); it will just take you a little while to read all the stuff (but not too long). Once I'd made the change, my game was fixed immediately, and I was able to go to the Temple ruins.

Still, that's only the fix for THIS bug. It's VERY important that your install order be correct, or you will run into problems later. You really need to install in the order Saber outlined above. All of the Weidu mods are supposed to be nearly fool-proof if installed after SoA, Tob, Tob Official patch, and Baldurdash fixpack (in that order), but Tortured Souls was originally a non-Weidu mod, and, quite frankly, I'm not sure that a lot of care went into converting it. I found it quite buggy, although I didn't experience any actual crashes except for the Temple Ruins area (but you'll probably run into problems in Spellhold - post here if you do). You should install what I mentioned above, THEN install Tortured Souls, and then any other Weidu mods you want (read the Read Me's for each, though; there are some compatability issues even with Weidu mods...most can be alleviated by installing in proper order).

I know this technical stuff is no fun, and can be a bit of a headache, but believe me, it will save you LOTS of further headaches down the road.

    *Sigh*

These things happens sometime, when you screw up install order; and to my experience, they sometimes just happen. Therefore I will echo my own words and state that you should always have a backup directory to restore your clean installation!

Things can especially royally screw up when you install mods and then ToB, seeing as ToB will override your dialog.tlk, and probably also some "items" in the override folder, etc.
Therefore correct order of installation is essential!
Furthermore you shouldn't have installed Redemption at all, seeing as it's an ascension add-on, and doesn't work with your game, seeing has you haven't got Ascensions installed ;) .

My guess to an "correct" order of install would be:

    • SoA
    • ToB
    • ToB patch (no SoA patch is needed at all)
    • ToB Fixpack (baldurdash)
    • Bonus merchants (though aren't these also part of the baldurdash fixpack?)
    • Weidu mods.
And in regards of Sabers list, listed with one non-weidu mod, then the Baldurdash fixpack *is* a non-weidu mod, and as such the only one you should install.

I'm not restarting my game if I can help it. That would be a huge pain. I'm not a fan of Irenicus' dungeon.

Should I wait until after finishing the normal game (with Tortured Souls) to install Ascension and Redemption?

    Everything installed again clean.

    I checked shadel.cre and shadeld.cre

The animation ID for both is: IC_LICH - 57440

This is wrong, correct? I need to change it to LICH - 32525 , correct?

Thank you for your help getting me off the ground with this!

PS: What kind of trouble in Spellhold should I expect?

Re: Lich stuff - yes, make those changes, and you should be good!

Re: Spellhold - I don't want to spoil things for you or anyone else who wants to play TS, so don't read further if you do...

MANY people have a game crash in Spellhold right after Irenicus captures you and puts you in the glass tube...the game doesn't shut down, it just doesn't progress past the point where the thieves die. Apparently, this only happens if you take the Pirate Lord's way to Spellhold, and Yoshimo decides not to betray you. If you take the Perth way, Yoshimo still betrays you for some reason, even though he's not supposed to with EITHER way, but the game doesn't crash, and you can keep playing. Seeing as how keeping Yoshimo is one of the most compelling reasons to play TS, I'm not sure it's worth it. :p I could not find a fix for this, and am not sure one exists.

Keep in mind that this crash apparently doesn't happen to everyone...you might get lucky. If you do, be sure and tell me how it feels to keep Yoshi!

Haven't gotten to Spellhold yet. I'm going throughg doing some various stuffs, so I haven't finished all the quests in Chapter 2. Lots of them.

    I have some more questions:

Is there any way to quite the Coran quest TortSoul comes with? I can't talk to or buy anything from Ribald Barterman, and he keeps trying to steal my goodies!

Secondly, What happens if you play a Druid and become evil in the game. Do you lose your spellcasting and shapeshifting?

Re: Coran...that's weird. If you haven't gone to Spellhold, you shouldn't HAVE Coran; you pick him up in the Forest of Tethyr after the underdark. Or are you saying you DON'T have Coran, but Ribald still won't sell to you? Either way, I'm afraid I'm at a loss...I never had a problem with this part of the game. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Jaheira is key to kicking off the Coran quest...specifically, she should be in your party when you first talk to Ribald. Did you have her? Although, I really can't imagine that having her or not should screw up the Adventurer's Mart. Then again, Tortured Souls is definitely the buggiest mod I've ever played with (not that I've played with a lot).

Re: Druid...I've never played a druid OR an evil character, so I don't know what would happen, sorry! I'd imagine someone else on the board could give you better information. However, it's my understanding that druids aren't like paladins or rangers...they can't become "fallen". In P&P D&D, your Dungeonmaster would probably impose serious penalties on you the further you shifted from true neutral, but I can't imagine that BG cares much what you do as a druid...until you get to the Hell Trials, of course. ;) After all, Faldorn's a druid, and she's as evil as they come.

Let me know how you make out with that Ribald problem...I'm really curious as to why that happened.

Oh, and I assume you made it to the Temple Ruins area successfully? :)

I had Jaheira to kick off the quest, but I kicked her after that. However, right now, Ribald can *only* talk to me about the quest. Even if I say I haven't found Coran it simply goes into the "report what happened to Coran" dialogue options!

Even worse, it repeats itself. It never ends no matter what I say or do.

The reason I asked about the Druid is that noramlly, in 2nd edition, a Druid who changes alignment would be stripped of powers (sort of like Paladin), and could get them back via Atonement. Obviouly, that's not possible in Baldur's gate, and I wondered if it would screw up the game.

That's a frustrating bug, all right. I just scanned the TS forum to see if anyone else encountered that problem, but couldn't find a post about it. I'm afraid you're SOL, unless some knowledgable techie here can walk you through a tour of your diag file and help you fix the problem...it's beyond me, sadly. :( The only other thing you can try is posting a message on the TS forum and asking for help...but from reading the existing posts there, it appears that the creator is VERY prickly about bugs, unwilling to accept blame, and not very helpful in fixing them...if he responds at all. (Can you tell I was a little soured on the Tortured Souls experience? )

As for the druids, didn't know that about the loss of spellcasting (it's been MANY years since I've played PnP), but I seriously doubt anything bad will happen to your druid if you start doing evil stuff, beyond the guilt you'll undoubtedly feel. :)
