I've recently replayed the OC and stumbled across a way of making Lorne much easier to beat. There is a dialog option to provoke Lorne into his "berserk/invulnerable to death" state right at the beginnning of the fight. That way he will have used up most of his invulnerability before he reaches zero hit points and he only last a few rounds longer.

Before you can do this you must learn the secret of how to do it from Georg Redfell. Unfortunately he only tells you if you stumble across a somewhat obscure line of dialog, you have to get him to relate the whole story of Cormick's fight with Lorne at the Harvest Brawl and you have to do this before you win the Harvest Cup.

Obviously Cormick also knows the secret but I've not been able to discover it from him. However I've never spoken to Cormick immediately before the trial by combat so maybe that's worth a try.

Interesting bit. Thanks :) Thus far I had only been able to successfully 'diplomatise' and 'bluff' him before fight, without results. I mean, of course. I presume the dialogue option involves using the 'taunt' skill?

Nope, no skills needed at all, I believe you just have to have had the conversation with Georg before hand.

It's listed as (taunt) when you select it. So it may be possible to fail, or it might just be the "illusion of choice" Bull again and always auto-work.

Btw, other selections also make him angry before the fight begins using the taunt skill iirc.

Nope that's not it at all, like I said it doesn't involve any skills. ;)

Saul Darkfire is correct. I used it with success also.

But there is some Diplomacy and Taunt options too, who makes Lorne pissed, if your skills are high enough. :)

Like telling him his beard is not as wellkept as his mothers.. and that's just the nice option..
