[IMG] Looking to increase my magic skills right now, and so I need trainer spells to push my %'s up.

What are the best initial spells to train up, and what spells are people 'creating' once able to increase their skills?

For either Oblivion or Morrowind I would say buy at least one low level spell from each school that you can cast anytime, ie: bound gauntlets.

In Oblivion your limit on what kind of spells you can create depends on your magic, what spells you already own and your money. Not sure if anything else affects it.

You can create spells in Morrowind by talking to a "spellmaker". Some Mages Guild or Telvanni people will have a trade option called "spellmaking" which allows you to create custom spells. You can then make one for only about 100 gold that only costs 1 magicka (and preferably doesn't hurt anyone) and spam it all over town. Number of spells cast is what raises your skill, with difficulty factoring in not at all.

Example - Restoration (Morrowind): Hearth Heal is a bit costly for a beginning player, so I head to Estirdalin (the High Elf in the basement of the Blamora Mages Guild) and create a spell I call Bael's Band-Aid (after the Restoration "master trainer") that heals 2 to 5 HP and only costs 1 magicka. Making the spell costs you only about 100 gold even for someone with a Mercantile skill of only 5, and it's more than worth it for more success when you're trying to heal yourself, not to mention the training aspect.

The problem with low level spells in Oblivion is that the less effect they have, the less skill you gain. I know people will probably tell me that Felinoid's system will still work, but since your magick automaticly recharges your better off going for an overpowered spell that costs a lot of magick power and casting it about two times. Same result, just faster. (The amount of skill gained per spell depends of the type of spell. e.g. Alteration shield spells will go up faster then an unlock spell. The School of magic also creates a differance {Conjeration will go up faster then Restoration})

From what I gather, Destruction spells need a target for the spell to count for an xp gain. My recomandation is to create a drain atribute spell that targets yourself .

I always thought that the level (or rather Magicka cost) of a spell does not have any effect on how a magic school attribute increases. As such, a spell that has a Magicka cost of 1 will level you up at the same rate as a spell with a Magicka cost of 100. Regardless, just get a low level spell with a cheap Magicka cost and cast it over and over. If you do not have access to the arcane university, just visit the mages guilds across Cyrodil and buy the lowest Magicka costing spell available (aim to get it below 25, or else you may find that it starts taking way too long to level as it will eat up all your magicka).

Quite, though put it on a skill if you can. Or have they closed that little Drain & Train exploit?

For Oblivion, do the following in the Praxographical centre:

Destruction - Weakness to Fire on Self 1 sec
Illusion - Light 10 ft on self for 1 sec
Restoration - Heal Minor Wounds is fine, set it for 1 pt on self for 1 sec if magicka is a concern
Mysticism - Minor Detect Life is fine
Alteration - Ease Burden 1 pt on self for 1 sec
Conjuration - Bound Boots/Gauntlets/Helmet for 1 sec on self...OR if you have the Magicka to burn, Summon Skeleton on self for 1 sec...

Just keep casting these on yourself and you will have 100 skill in no time, oh well...except for Restoration which takes HOURS to level up...

My experience with Oblivion agrees with The Magister's post. The reason I go for low level spells to start is 1) they are cheap and 2) I have enough magic to cast them. As my funds and magicka increase I get higher level spells and use them. And Restoration does take forever but you do use it a lot.

You can also use Destruction spells on all those stupid wolves who insist upon attacking you.
