There's a rather interesting article not about BioWare and not about Atari and not about Floodgate and not about Shadows of Undrentide at Neverwinter Nights 2 News. Here's an excerpt:

I was talking to a peep many moons ago who worked in the QA dept for a publishing company we'll call Etari. Back in the day when the company Toxicware (TW) contracted another firm Damgate (DG) to work on the game Lights of Overentide (LoO). Etari was publishing the product.

LoO was a expansion for a fairly popular game (disclaimer: That has no connection with this site) and was in development for some time at DG. DG of course had to send in milestones to TW and Etari at regular time frames.

'Toxicware' - makes me wonder whether these people have any idea what the prefix 'bio' actually means... :p

The first NeverWinter Nights game was in production for 5 years? ye gods...I did and still prefer the "antiquated" infinity engine games to the original Neverwinter Nights.

I really doubt it. That means work started in 1997, and that point "Toxicware" was still halfway through working on the first BG. I would assume work on NWN would have started in 2000, shortly after the release of BG2.

It is rather ironic that SoU should turn out to be better than the OC even though it was made in such a short time.

BG2 did mention the ability to continue in Neverwinter Nights and I think it was already in SoA, before ToB, so that would be before 2000. If BioWare had had the habit of working on games for five years back then, then Baldur's Gate must have started as a DOS game in development.

They started on NWN before the release of BG2, but it was a side project that didn't get fully started until BG2 was out of the door.
