I don't think I agree with this list. I thought Microprose should have been on the list, but I think that their comments of Black Isle are spot on. I also liked Looking Glass's System Shock quite a bit.

I had a blast playing these two Microprose games:

The only ones I agree with from that list are Looking Glass, Bullfrog and Black Isle. Microprose I would definitely add onto that list as well. If I had to make a list it would be a top 8, the remaining ones would be SSI, Origin, Sierra (it may still exist in name but it has nothing to do with the original Sierra On-Line) and NWC. I feel these companies have really created some remarkable games, and in some cases spawned new genres.

When I saw this thread title on the front page Microprose was the first name that popped into my head also.

It is quite impossible to list the top five only. There were many great studios that deserve to be on it.

So now I spent the better part of an hour rummaging through my closet and lo and behold I found my old Master of Magic discs. My first thoughts were will this even work on XP, will I be able to find patches to the latest version?

Of course my first thought should have been... "Damn, I wish I had a 3.5" floppy drive: :D

I may have to check out some abandonware sites now.
