I was browsing at a local computer store and came across the IceWind Dale and expansion. Do they preceed Balder's Gate II or come after it? I've not finished Balder's Gate II and haven't played Balder's Gate. Does it matter? Just curious.

The short answer is it does not matter. I think, and this is off the top of my head, that IWD is set around 100 years after BG & BG2. I think IWD is in 1337 or something like that and BG is in the 1200's. I could check the games and give you the right answer when I'm in front of my computer at home. Meanwhile someone else may have exact dates for you.

From another post on this forum, I read that the character Drizzt did not appear in this world at all before some years after IWD. He appears in BG1, so...

Thanks for your answers, though I think I confused the issue. I'm more concerned with story line type of continuity and level. For example, never having played the original Balder's Gate I jumped into the second game and was immediately 8th level. So the story doesn't matter but what about gaming experience?

    TIA

Icewind Dale has nothing to do with the Baldur's Gate games. It is completely separate and you begin your game with all first level characters (all of which you make yourself; no joinable NPCs). I found IWD and HoW more challenging tactically than the BG games.
