I just installed and updated Thief II
It started up fine, until I start the first mission. The screeng goes blank, I alt-tab, and see the following error message:
"ERROR: Direct3D device driver does not accurately report texture memory usage.
Contact your 3D accelerator vendor for updated drivers."
So, I got the latest drivers, installed them, rebooted my PC, tried again, and the same thing happened.
I'm running on WinXP Pro and using a NVidia Gforce FX 5600.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can make this game work?

Two possibilities: either Thief II doesn't run well under XP, or your video drivers are too *recent* - the game is old after all.

Try messing around with compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, try installing Win98 :D

I'm thinking that it's XP. It's been a while since I ran XP, but I do remember having a LOT of problems running the Theif games, or System Shock 2. I can't say myself though, since I went back to 2000 a long time ago. There's probably plenty of workarounds floating around. Try Through the Looking Glass: www.ttlg.com They've got stuff for all the Looking Glass games, plus some other stuff.

I remember in Half-Life one could switch the video acceleration from D3D to software or Open GL acceleration. That might fix it.

If it's a driver problem, go to www.nvidia.com and go to the driver archive, they have all of them there, and roll back until it works.

If it's a WinXP, problem, I have no idea how to fix that, aside from switching to good old Win 2000 Pro.

@KAM: Thanks... it works now, and gave the solution to another problem I'd been bothered by in the process...
@Rednik: That might also have worked, but as it works now, I'll refrain from downgrading my drivers (as I also play modern games on this PC)
Replacing Windows wouldn't have been an option in the first place, but luckily, it works now.
    Thanks, SPeople.

Oh. Yeah. That's a texture problem with the newer drivers and the Nvidia 5x00 cards. The Detonator 51's and above, I think, are the ones that have the problem. There's a patch available somewhere, for both Dark Project and Gold; all versions. So, you could use pre-50's drivers (which I'm not sure completely "support" that card), or use the patches. If you were using an... alternative executable, then you'll have to put the cd in the drive to play the game. C'est la vie.

For Thief 2, there's an entry in the config file that you use. It slows down the game, but I actually had problems with the game running too fast; so this "fix" serves a double purpose, and simply shows the developers' skills and foresight.
