Okay, I'd love any feedback to have on this topic. I'm in the middle of making a multiplayer party of five to run wild through BG2 and I'm very much stuck on how to create my thief.

The rest of my party is:
    1) 1/2 Elf FighterMage (main character)
    2) Human Inquisitor
    3) Human Berserker (will dual to cleric)
    4) Human Sorceror
    5) Thief??????

There's no need for a pure thief once I get my core skills where they need to be. And I'd like him focused on range weapons so he can hang back w/ my spellcaster.

Thoughts? I'm torn between wanting him to be able to use a variety of ranged weapons (longbow, heavy crossbow) and being a rocking spell caster (thief dualed to mage).

Any ideas? I tried the figher/mage/thief route and felt it stretched him a bit too thin.

    Let me know,

    Caspian

Ok, your limited to short bows, light crossbows and slings unless you dual/multi to fighter, so if you want to work with them theres a few good options:

Have a Fighter/ Thief and this will allow good thac0 with bows but will also allow good melee and importantly backstabbing capabilities.

A mage/ thief multi will also be advantage as a third mage since you want him at the back anyway. This will be a poor backstabber for alot of the game.

The only problem is that they will not max out unless your using the XP cap remover or have ToB.

I'd replace that human Berserker/Cleric with a Cleric/Ranger multiclass, so you wouldn't have to miss out on Druid spells.

I'd make that thief a Dwarven (for the saves) Fighter/Thief (for the same reasons Malovae mentioned). Alternately, I'm told the Kensai/Thief dual class is very powerful, but it might be tough going for a while without a Thief.

@ Klorox - Yes but a beserker gets beserker rage and mekes a better fighter (defensive spells + Beserker rage = practically invincible fighter. also He will have access to grand mastery in all weapons.)

Halflings have better saves if you're going for a fighter/thief (the only Halfling multiclass)

Caspian, you seem a bit light on healing, a cleric thief is good (stack up on sancuaries - they allow you to pick locks, disarm traps and pick up items without breaking the invisibility effect) but a tad weak.

The Halflings get just as good saves as the dwarf, but since the bonuses are based on CON, the dwarf edges the halfling out (dwarves gain +1 CON during character creation).

I would suggest having a Fighter/Thief multiclass of some race (elf or halfling for the best thief skill racial bonuses). You'll have enough skills and pretty good combat ability, too. I don't think you'd need any more arcane power.

You might also consider a gnome or halforc Cleric/Thief multiclass (they're the only permitted races). Not so good in combat, but more divine casting...

Andyr: Gnomes can be Cleric/Thieves too.
