    He said, in a book that he has written containing this short story, that it is the story he got the most mail about. People could never remember the title.

    I loved this story and could never remember who wrote it because I read it in a compendium of short stories in 7th grade (borrowed the book from a teacher). Thank you so much for this thread!

    I'm pretty sure I read that in my early teens; I could see the ending coming about 1/3 of the way through.

    Still an excellent story.

    Good story. First time I'd read it. Some years ago, a friend of mine attended an Asimov lecture and brought back this shaggy dog story told by the good doctor:

    Two Chaucerian scholars were friends, but they were also rivals, being both in love with the same woman, whose name was Edith. Unlike many men who are rivals in love, they were reasonable about it, and remained friends.

    One evening the three of them were having dinner together. The two scholars, who delighted in their erudition, were happily conversing in Middle English. Edith, no scholar, barely understanding one word in three, finally got fed up and exclaimed,"If you two can't speak plain English, I'm going to walk out on both of you!"

    "Well," quipped one scholar, "I guess we can't have archaic and Edith too!"
