I wonder what will happen to SP after the RPG series inevitably dies out with the death of Bioware and BG when they run out of popularity.

Will anyone still keep coming here if the RPG series dies (which is pretty much the life blood of the whloe reason the site was started) or will the whatnots forums and other misc. be enough to keep the place alive? I really hope so!

The RPG genre will never die out. Well, I strongly doubt it anyway. But this site isn't for RPG's as a whole :p . Its for D&D RPG's which is why games like Morrowind etc dont get their own forum. The D&D genre is probably dying out. It has already begun.

Might it be necessary to broaden the spectrum of games that these boards cover? Like, the new Star Wars RPG Knights of the Old Republic has got rave reviews left right and centre and I am certainly gonna buy it as soon as I get £35 quid spare :p

This is a ridiculous statement. First of all, Bioware didn't die, it was Black Isle Studios. Second, neither Bioware nor Black Isle invented RPG's, even forgotten realms/ D&D based RPG's. RPG's were around long before Black Isle, they will be around long after Black Isle. Third, SP won't just up and die.

I disagree that the D&D genre is dying out. A nitch market, sure. But I don't think it will ever really die out as long as there's a demand for it. It's one of the most popular and well conceived systems for RPG's and it won't go away any time soon. If anything is on it's way out, it's PC games in general.

[IMG] There are several reasons why KoTOR isn't covered on SP, but primarily because there are literally millions of Star Wars sites out there, and I presumed the game would get decent coverage somewhere else anyway. Then there is the fact that the game on PC is a console port (and that I haven't been keeping tabs on its development at all), that it isn't really a D&D game, but a "light" implementation of the Star Wars d20 system, that there could be no possible connection between it and the other games covered on SP, that we didn't cover it in the news on the front page... and more.

But if it ever came to the point where D&D games would be in short supply for an extended period of time, with no new ones on the horizon, SP would certainly expand to cover some other CRPGs. After I used up the break to catch up on all the games lying on my shelf, and doing all the work on SP that is still on the to-do list, that is. If anything, I'd welcome a short break. But have no fears, SP isn't going anywhere. That's one thing you can always depend on.

I don't think you should worry too much about running out of D&D games. It's true that there isn't any planned for the immediate future, but what about Dungeons & Dragons Online? Everquest have lived for, well, ever :) And I'm expecting the D&D game to be a succes.

DnD has been going since the 70's I don't think Black Isle going under is going to change that much. As has been said before, there is alot more to SP and the BoM than Baldur's Gate and its sequals, take a look around.

SP will never die  , as there are many regular poster that drop by just as much for the non-gaming forums.
I usually spend more time in the non-gaming fora, because this is just the place where I hang out when on the web.

On that, i agree. To be honest, I no longer post regularily in the game forums... I come here for the company.

(Although I admit that I will most likely be posting in the BG and PST forums in the future...)

Mods, Total Conversions, or even lesser addons.
If no new (good) crpgs come, these will still keep the rpg players (and communities) alive.
And the great advantage of the most rpgs: playable many times, and still entertaining.

And if there were no mods or TCs, such good sites as SP would still have future. The community would keep them together for a long time.

Sorry if this is resurrecting an old post (it's only a month old), but it seemed like the right place to say this:

Don't you think Sorcerer's Place is one of the best run web places around? I mean, it is well set out, it has clear rules that are strictly enforced (but in a nice way - not a control-freaky way), things are updated on a very regular basis, and hardly anything ever goes wrong.

I think sometimes we take all this for granted (except those generous people who make those donations). So I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU and I am pretty sure that Sorcerer's Place will not be dying out anytime soon.

Sometimes we forget how good SP is
...a thread from a few months back, where those same sentiments were expressed. (This is not a knock on your post, Harbourboy, just adding support to your comments. :D )

SP seems to be a cut above the norm. :thumb:

Splunge, that was the thread that convinced me to stop lurking and start posting. Three cheers for SP!

I was a lurker for almost a year before I joined.

That's why it seems like I already know so many of you, and have settled into a comfortable exchange of insults :D .

Seriously though...I visit several other sites that deal with gaming as well as other things...and they are an absolute mess!

I know that there are days that Tal or BTA or Extremist or Beren just don't feel like logging on because of other pressing life issues...and they do...just to keep this site the best...somehow they find the time to do so.

Here's to SP. Although there is no "hot new" CRPG on the horizon...someday there will be, and SP will be there to provide forums and chat rooms to an avid audience.

Thanks Tal. Next time you wonder if it is all worth the time and effort...it is.

Interesting. Pointless question: To count as an official "lurker" do you have to be registered or unregistered? Or doesn't it matter?

Anyway, I can't even see how the administrators manage to log in every day and keep this place under control. Do they ever go to sleep? Maybe they're not real people - just an elaborate computer program . . . .

RPGs in general will definitely not die. I strongly believe that Obsidian Entertainment is going to start a new era for PC RPGs.

D&D games however, I'm not too sure about. As things are going now, it looks to me like ToEE/HotU may be the last D&D game products to ever be made.

Nah, they'll continue pumping out D&D stuff because it sells - no matter how mediocre it is. SP have heaps to cover in the future, though most of it will probably be crap.
