    ------I MEAN THE BEST WEAPON------

Yep, the level 9 mage spell, beats all weapons in game, heres why.

    BLACK BLADE OF DISASTER [WIZARD]

    School : Evocation Range : 0 SP
    Components : V,S,M Duration : 1 round/level
Casting Time : 9 Area of Effect : special
Saving Throw : None Spell Level : 9

This spell enables the caster to create a black, blade-shaped planar rift, about three feet long. It jumps into the caster's hand and is used as a normal sword, remaining there for the duration of the spell. The caster is considered to be proficient in this weapon. The sword acts as a +5 weapon and deals 2-24 damage to its victims. While using this weapon the wizard uses the THAC0 of a fighter of half his level. For example, if this is cast by an 18th level wizard, he would use combat tables for a 9th level fighter and hence his base THAC0 would be 12. Also, every time this hits a target the victim must make a save vs. death at +4 or be disintegrated.

A +5 weapon; not many of them in the game; deals out 2-24 damage; small chance of disintegerating someone. Pretty good THACO depending on your level, and gives us mages a chance to beat fighters at there own game.

    Fantastic!
Maybe not the best weapon in the game, but certainly a contender.

    Nah.

Black Blade of disaster is +6 weapon no matter what the description says.

And of course, it is not the best weapon in the game. There are dozens of enemies immune to the instant kill effect of that weapon. Plus, there is a nice Death Ward cleric spell to make yourself immune on it.

[IMG] Mmmh, I just don't know...

Casting time: 9 heh? Better have the Robe of Vecna or probably be interrupted. I realy don't like these long casting times.
And I don't like pure mages to fight. Rather have them cast enchantment, immobile the opponent, use a Ray of enfeeblement to make them weak and then cast damaging spells...just the mage-way. :)

But for a weapon it is not bad at all!
But then, I don't like the disintegrate-aspect: With my XP I want to see a loot as a reward....

Would be more suited to a Fighter/Mage

    Bah!

A waste of a spell slot IMO. You can do *a lot* more damage by simply casting improved alracity and damage spells like Albidalzims, Comet, and Flame Arrow. And I don't wear the Robe of Venca, way overpowered, but even without it improved alracity is awsome. I just kicked Jon Irenicus's ass with it 1 vs 1. 3 magic missles and then a comet that knocked him off his ass and against the wall, heh.

    Lord,
You probably have (--whispering--)ToB installed before you got to Johnny I.?

    Yes, you did! ;)
And how can you say that the robe of Vecna is way overpowered, when Improved Alacrity could be even worse? :)

  8. Hmmm . . . pay around 9000 gp at Ribald's to use Black Blade of Disaster once? Nah. Black Blade, IMHO, doesn't even contend well with Crom, Carsomyr, or SotM. Sorry D-master, but I don't believe it's a good choice. Have a wizard stick to spells. A fighter/mage (or the ever-so-cheap kensai/mage) could use it well, I guess. Oh well, to each his own.

Yes, I had ToB installed. But I am soloing, so all of the experience goes to me. Is that cheating? I have a powerful character because I do everything myself.

No, improved alracity is powerful on it's own, but if you add the overpowered Robe of Vecna, it's insanley powerful, almost to the point of stupidity. Also it looks stupid casting spells before you even finish the incanation.

Perhaps that's why the robe is not part of the original game?

On the other hand, when a mage can cast 9th level spells, his spell casting SHOULD be God-like. Needs to be balanced against fighters with +5 weapons, dual weilding, 25 str, and bloody hasted for 10 attacks/round....

When a mage can cast 9th level he can do a lot better than putting himself in the line of fire by pretending he's a fighter with a nasty sword.

I think they actually CAN backstab with it, because (stupidly) thieves can backstab with a regular longsword or even some katanas/scimitars. But why bother? The damage spread is too risky. I mean, what are you gonna do if you get to the one time you NEED a 24x5 roll and get a 3 instead?

    'Backstab quintuple damage = 15'

    Hahaha!!!!

have a fighter mage use it with greater whirlwind, 10attacks pr round, neat :)

or the thiefs asassination skill go along with it. Could be neat to. Thiefs can use scrolls with use any item ability as well.

or fĂghter/thief/mage for using it all the time with different skills.
