Definitely committed! I can't even tell you how many times I have played Civ 2 over the years but I don't think I've even kept it going to the year 2200, to keep it going to almost 4000 is sheer insanity.

The game gets so incredibly boring at that point, I wonder how he motivated himself to go back and keep playing for a decade?

Even I stand amazed at the dedication.

Well clearly, he wasn't playing this game ALL the time. He probably took days are even weeks off at a time. While it's true that the game gets MUCH longer on a per-turn basis the further into the future you go, you could certainly get to the year 4000 in far less than 10 years.

Assuming the standard time scale of 1 turn is 1 year in the later part of the game, he's played about 2000 additional turns than a standard game, which has a little less than 1000 turns IIRC. So his game involved about three times as many turns as a standard game would. Granted, those are LONG turns, but the stalemate he has going is not completely unexpected.

Remember, this is Civilization II. There weren't diplomatic, cultural, etc. victories. The only way you could win was to conquer the world. Clearly by the time you're in turn 3000 or so, all three surviving nations have all the technologies available to them. If he's playing on a fairly high difficulty level - let's say at least "King" - the AI of the computer is quite good. Even if he is a highly skilled player, since all three nations are essentially the same at this point, it isn't that surprising that he can't get the upper hand. And I remember playing Civ II - the AI loves nukes.

I am pretty sure there were different victory conditions in Civ2 as well. Space for sure and I think there was some diplomatic victory as well. Obviously disabled and I doubt he has played the game seriously the last 2000 turns or so.
