[IMG] Which stats should I boost for a Halfling Assassin who will be solo-ing SoA in order to have better saves ?

Also, the racial description says that halflings have magic resistance ? Is this true ? or another discrepancy in the racial descriptions ?

if true, how much DO they have?

    thanks in advance...

Halflings don't have Magic Resistance, they have resistance to magic. :D It means they have better saves than any other race.

You don't need to boost STR, since you can get a Girdle of Hill Giant STR really soon. CON would be a good one to boost. WIS helps your saves vs. magic, but you need at least 15. Put your DEX at 18 because 19 doesn't help any with AC, and not that much with ranged weapons. These are the stats I'd give him...

    STR:14
    DEX:18
    CON:17
    INT:10
    WIS:15
    CHA:14
    TTL:88

These stats should be fairly easy to get, but you may need to sacrifice a few points if you don't want to sit there for hours.

Halflings should have the resistance. That's not actually in the game, just like the elven immunity to charm and sleep.

I don't recommend the STR girdle. If you are soloing you may encounter one or two Abi Dalzims here and there. ;) Someone might shoot an arrow at you. ;) I'm sure you would prefer Belt of Inertial Barrier.

Rolling an Assassin is easy IMO.
    STR - 17
    DEX - 19
    CON - 16
    INT - 11
    WIS - 11
    CHA - whatever

For STR boost you can drink potions (the red ones for all nonfighter classes), after UAI you'll have potions galore. You intend to steal, right ? :)

I tend to agree with Mystra on STR - I'd rather use the STR belt, but that's just me.

CON should be 16 (anything more is a waste).

19 DEX gives better thieving bonuses, which IMO is important given that the assassin only gets 15 points/level. Also, it gives a thac0 bonus for ranged weapons.

My understanding is that the saving throw bonuses for high WIS are not actually implemented in the game.

INT is only important against mind flayers, but 10 or 11 should be good enough.

    CHA - who cares.

@Rastor - did I understand you correctly? Are you saying the racial bonuses for magic resistances (elf, half-elf) and saving throws (gnomes, halflings, dwarves) are not actually implemented?? I never heard that one before. :almostmad:

I was always under the impression that the 'sleep', 'magic' resistance etc. was refering to adjstments to saving throws. Such as the Dwarf having a better saving throw vs. spells....not sure about halflings?

I'm playing an assassin at the moment and I'm having a great time. Mine is dual class mage/assassin (I cheated a bit by using Shadow Keeper to make the second class a kit - but it adds alot of fun to the game :) )

    Stats:

    Str - 18
    Dex - 18
    Con - 8
    Int - 18
    Wis - 10
    Cha - 8

Total - 80 (my first role)

Dualled at lvl 12, solo'd from level 10 thief.

As for your halfling - they make the best single classed thieves so it should be fun. keep the Dex at 19 and try using shortbows if your undecided about weapons. Tuigen bow early in the game and then gesen later. Don't worry about the rest of the stats too much, just try to keep them above 10 if possible. :)

[IMG] Charisma - Get the Ring of Human Influence (Cha 18)
Strength - Buy Girdle of Hill Giant Strength (Str 19)
Dexterity - Get the Gauntlets of Dexterity (Dex 18)
Constitution - Get the Girdle of Fortitude (Sets Con to 18 each "day")

    So what do you need?
Some decent Intelligence and Wisdom stats, but it's really not needed as they are pretty much only cosmetical for your solo Assassin. I like a nice Intelligence score (11 or 16) for fighting Mind Flayers although that's really optional.

The following are perfectly good initial stats for a soloing Halfling Assassin:
    Str 8
    Dex 9
    Con 10
    Int 11
    Wis 10
    Cha 3
    (Total: 51 points)

With the items equipped you will pretty soon have the following stats:
    Str 19
    Dex 18
    Con 18
    Int 11
    Wis 10
    Cha 18

If you have more points to distribute - and you probably have - don't put them in Charisma. The best way to spend your surplus stat points is to get a 19 Dexterity.

Hey guys, thanks a ton for your help...I checked out the ability scores tables in the manual, rolled and got the following stats...

    STR- 14
    DEX- 19
    CON- 16
    INT- 12
    WIS- 17
    CHA- 8

How about them ? Good enough ?]

Also, what weapon proficiencies should I go for among the melee weapons? Also, the Assassin gets hardly any points when he levels up, so what should I put the points into? Because, I need open locks n detect traps and stuf coz thats what Thieves are for...but I also LOVE to backstab and the like, which is why I chose the Assassin kit in the first place, else I'd have taken a Swashbuckler...

Another doubt I had was whether it is viable to dual an Assassin to a Fighter at lvl 21?

Why did you put 12 INT? 10 does exactly the same thing (no lore bonus, but no lore penalty). If you want more lore than you've got to go to 15. Of course, I think it fits since with a wisdom of 17 he should be fairly intelligent. Also, if you want (but I wouldn't recommend it) you can dual to a cleric/assassin.

As soon as you can afford it get the ring of Invisibility. I'm sure I don't need to tell you why (hint: backstab, invis, backstab, 2 enemies dead).

I'd go for a proficiency in Daggers, Short Bows and if you want Short Sword (Kudane +2, Speed Factor 0) or Scimitars (Belm +2, extra attack).

Of course, you could always go with the standard Katana and Long Sword, but a Halfling Assassin wouldn't have those from a roleplaying perspective.

PS: I got my Avatar today! :D

What melee weapons did you take? The best dagger I found eary on is the boomerang dagger which can be found on cap'n dennis in the Bridge District. But i think you will need to find a +3 weapon to take on liches (Blade of Roses is a good choice). To takle spellcasters the arrows of dispelling are priceless (steal them of course ;) ) and the Cloak of the sewers to polymorph into a Mustard jelly for 100% magic resistance.

    Good Luck mate

The Cloak of Sewers is great for a solo player because you can shift into a Troll and regen yourself.

Be sure to put some points in Sling and Dagger. That way you can use the Sling of Seeking when you get a STR girdle (and you'll be hitting everything because of the 19 dex and the Halflings slingin' ability). When you get in the underdark you can buy Firetooth, which you can use as a good +3 Dagger (melee and thrown) with some extra fire damage. I'd use the sling almost all the time though, because with 21 STR, you'll be getting a good 40 points each hit!

Also, always use Boneblade when backstabbing. If you use Firetooth, the fire damage isn't multiplied by the backstab ability. With boneblade you get extra damage.

Also, I'd screw the traps ability for now and concentrate on hiding and detect illusions.

What are you talking about? A Halfling is the easiest race to solo. Such wicked resitances make him have really great saves. A Halfing Fighter/Theif is a mad strong char.
