Staff of Power

I'm on my final choice with my apprentices, and I want to know what to make, the Ring of Wizardry or the Staff of Power. Are they any more rings in the game, and if so where about, also what does the Staff of Power actually do?

BTW- I have all my mages alive, and they made the wand and then Ali Dazib's Horrid Wilting for me, I dunno whether this helps or not though.

I don't know any definitive answers but I will tell you what happened to me.

First Item: Dagger - successfull
Second Item: Horrid Wilting Spell - sucessful
Third Item: Staff 'O Power - Everyone dies!!!

I don't know what the staff does. I have heard from other people that trying to create it almost always leads to exploding apprentices. I have heard that there is a 20% chance that they will create the staff just before their impending jiffy-pop doom. You might be able to retrive it from one of thier origianl recipie corpses.

 

This is my experience:

1st test - Dagger: no one died
2nd test - Mislead scroll: again no one died
3rd test - Staff of Power - go for glory! It took half a week and my party actually slept in the sphere waiting for the results. Boom, one by one, Nara, Larz and Morul exploded in fireworks. But I got the Staff of Power on Morul's body! I can't access my file now but IIRC it is a +2 staff, gives +2 AC bonus and is able to shoot lightning of something that stuns opponents for 5 (not very sure of no.) rounds - no save! I am saving the charges (10 only, I think) for the bad, bad guys.

Thus far, I have not been back to the sphere and not sure what Teos the Cowled Wizard would say to find all apprentices dead!

 

The cowled wizard will confront you about it, but he will not make a big deal about it. They just say "oh well" and that they will be contacting you in the future

 

I got a Ring of Wizardry off one of the mages in the Harper headquarters. It was when I followed Jaheira to the place and their boss wanted to lock me up. The item description still said that "the mage Veracitas (name of my character) made this ring" or something like that, even though he's not a mage .

 

More info on the Staff of Power: it can cast Globe of Invulnerability aside from the Lightning bolt of Paralyzation which causes 10d6 damage, save for half damage but no save for the stun. I think it also gives bonus 2 to THAC0. What's disappointing is that it looks like a normal +1 staff. (I hope I don't accidentally sell it off by mistake one of these days!)

I met Teos the Cowled Wizard last night. He said "All three dead ... Excellent tutoring." I ignored his note of sarcasm and said too bad, these things happen.

 

OK, cheers for the help. I'll get the ring of wizardry, because I have no one with quarterstaff prof. in my party. And no, I don't want Imoen for the staff as I have already have 2 mages in my party, me (kensai/mage) and Aerie.
