I know the part Yoshimo plays in relation to the quest if he's with you when you enter Spellhold, but in my just completed game I left him in the Copper Coronet before going there. When I went back to the Coronet to rest during the process of gathering allies for the last assault on Bodhi, Yoshimo was right where I left him, but died the moment I entered. Why exactly does he die? Does it have something to do with why he plays the part he does in the quest?

Yes. My explanation: The geas killed him for not fullfilling his part of the 'deal'.

Why was he forced into the deal again?

    *Possible SPOILER's*

@ Aerie: As far as I remember, Yoshimo had made some powerful enemies in Athkatla (Shadow thieves). Irenicus offered him what none else could: Sanctuary in the return of favor(s) (Killing the protagonist). Irenicus placed a geas upon him (as he'd done with all other of his servants), and gave him the order to bring the protagonist safely to Spellhold.
Now, storywise the geas kick in due to the fact that it was not Yoshimos doing that secured the safe arrival of the protagonist; thus he has not lived up to the orders given to him. The reason as of why he first dies when you enter the Cooper Coronet probably lies in some scripting issue, which tells Yoshimo to die when he sees the protagonist after spellhold.

A geas last's till it's undone; but the powers of the sorcerer is immense, and would most likely require somewhat a bit more than a normal counterspell in order to negate. So yoshimo has to do the bidding of Irenicus (killing the protagonist) or he'll suffer death and eternal agony (In spellhold if his flagged as travelling with the party).
Only in death can Ilmater might linger his suffering.

    Thanks Olimikrig.

I actually had Yoshimo in my very first party that was part of the first completed game I played, but in a twist of irony, he was killed right outside The Asylum. It was only when I confronted Irenicus that I found out about Yoshimo's enforced betrayal.

Suppose you drop Yoshimo in some other area than the Copper Coronet and tell him to "wait here", say in the market in Trademeet. The next time you go to the market in Trademeet, will he drop dead the way he does in the Coronet?

Yoshimo would die no matter where I left him. For Yoshimo to live, he has to deliver me to Irenicus. Anything else means he dies.

A WAY TO KEEP YOSHIMO ALIVE:
When you enter CC, PAUSE the game IMMEDIATELY, and force-talk Yoshimo. Normally, Yoshi's script will be dying but now he will wait until you come and talk him. Have him re-join. When he joins you his script will kick in and he will be dead. OH now you can ressurect him normally and keep him forever!!!

BTW this is CHEESE, if not CHEATING. Yoshi will not have any comment or interaction after this point as he is supposed to be dead. Use it if you REALLY, REALLY love Yoshimo.

IF you had Yoshi in Spellhold, you will eventually kill him, but can take his hearth to an Ilmater church for a WHOPPING 200.000xp!!!

Note that the Baldurdash fixpack fixes this bug though...

And if you really want to get cheesy, you might as well exploit the bug where you can summon a demon that'll automatically attack kill the priest. When he's dead you can take the heart from his body (it cannot be pickpocketed), and then give the heart to yet another priest of Ilmater for yet another 200,000 experience ;)

I'm pulling this one back up, because I'm at this same point again in my new game, and Yoshimo isn't dying. I even brought him back into my party before I noticed Imoen (I inadvertently picked Jan over Imoen in the maze below Spellhold, and Imoen walked off on me), and replaced him with her. Whenever I go back there he's still alive. Shouldn't he be dying the moment I enter the CC?

I want to keep Imoen over Yoshimo, but Imoen is a way behind the rest of my party when it comes to experience points, and subsequently her abilities don't match everyone else. I could bring Jan back into the party, as I left him at him at his house in the Slums (I did his subquest after coming out of the Underdark, so he's right with the rest of my party for XP and abilities), but I like Imoen a lot.

I think Yoshimo's not dying when the party sees him in the CC was fixed in either the official patch or Baldurdash. A lot of people used this exploit to keep Yoshimo in the party since they liked a single class thief more.

@Aerie's #1 - You could CLUA Imoen's XP up to a level nearer to the party. Or, if that feels too much like cheating, you can find a bunch of mage scrolls, kick everyone out of the party except for you and Imoen and have her memorize spells. If you have a romance, don't kick out your true love.

@kuemper - I haven't added any patches or anything between games, so I don't know how Yoshimo is not dying in this game.

I could add XP to Imoen via CLUA, but that would feel too much like cheating. I think I'll likely keep her right at the back, and give her the Gaesen Bow (which I'm about to go and get made) to let her pick people off from a distance to get her XP up with minimal risk.
