You can do that, it gives 9000 xp to learn a lvl 9 spell but you can't use it for you can reach only lvl 17 and a lvl 17 mage can't remember a lvl 9 spell.

Also remember that intelligence affects a wizards ability to memorise spells. See the 'Ability Scores' table at the back of the manual. Even with 18 inteligence there is only an 85% chance of success. You can take a potion to boost you inteligence before trying to learn a spell though. (Does anyone know if these stats are affected by the level of the spell). Also speacilists mages can't learn spells from their opposite school. Maybe the spell you are struggling with is from an opposite school. Again, see the 'Wizard Specialist Requirement' Table for more info.

Yep I think that's the problem.... You can't cast a lvl 9 spell but you should be able to learn it. Are you a specialist-mage?

[IMG] Well spotted Miss Kitiara ;)

Of course, some dare to remove the xp-cap, and this achieve level 18 as a mage, which allows them to cast level 9 spells. However, also keep in mind that Intelligence not only determines your chance of succes for scribing a spell and the total amount of spell you can have in your spellbook, it also determines if you de facto can do something with a certain spell. I guess you need at least 18 Int to be able to scribe level 9-spells.

The point would be to gain 9,000 ex pts. If you find a few of the same level 9 spells... what the hell?

The expansion pack is also going to let you go up to level 40 (I think) so you might start learning spells now in anticipation.

Good one Slappy, hadn't thought about that!

When you have 2 scrolls you can use one by putting the scroll in a quick-slot and cast it. When you don;t need it, a lvl 9 spell is also worth lotta money :)

A wiser, more profitable, though slightly cheap method would of course be to cast Simulacrum and let him/her/it cast the spell from the scroll.

in the expansion not all the classes can go to level 40. I think only thieves and bards can because they go level up very quikly. In another post I read that the XP-cap was a few million(I think). (Don't know which post that was)

That was mine, I suppose, antoine :)

And yes, 8 million'll be the cap, which means that rogues'll get to level 40 thanks to some tweaking of the rules. Other classes'll probably cap around 30-36 I suppose. Of course it's unnessecary to add that the developers don't intend that you actually reach those levels, not even close.

To learn a spell which you don't want to loose by a failure, you can set the game's difficulty one lower. Every thing will be the same in the game, except that your character's can't die permanently (Only by very powerful traps that kill you outright) and all spells are learned automaticly, no more failure!! Works for me!
BTW, it will also give you your max. hitpoints when you gain anotjer level.
