    [IMG] Dear All

We've been talking about spell checkers a lot recently in the chatroom and I've been hunting around for my own needs. Anyway, I now know of two that might be useful to you as they are both free :D The downside is that you have to cut and paste you text into and out of the sorcerers message box. Still not exactly a big problem, especially if you're settled in to spam for the night :)

Anyway, here are the links (PS the second one is courtesy of Sprite):
    http://www.spellcheck.net/
    http://www.yourdictionary.com/cgi-bin/lkupreg.cgi

So if I see any more mistakes I'll be handing out lines ;)

  2. What happens if we don't need spellcheckers? Ya know, I think I type hardly any mistakes in my posts, and I'm 11. Thanks for the link, but no thanks.

Shadow_Goddess If you don't need the link then don't use the link. It could be very helpful to those who have not an inherent gift for spelling.

Spelling. It is a noble goal to strive for perfect spelling. On the boards, it may be useful. I have seen some very bad spelling indeed. In the chatrooms may be different. The chatrooms are for more spontaneous conversations. Using a spell checker, cutting and pasting afterward, this would destroy the sense of conversation. I suppose if you have something wordy that you want to say in the charroom it may be useful, but most of the spelling errors made are due to trying to type fast in order to get your message/response up fast.
On the Boards, if you wanted to use a spell checker, use Microsoft Word and check it there, then cut and paste.

[IMG] The first one doesn't even understand basic words so I don't see how you can recommend it.

Luan, your response confuses me. I have now used this spellchecker for a number of posts. OK it doesn't recognize all words especially slang words but it's not bad and it's free. How can I not recommend it for people who like to check their spelling but don't want to have something like Word running in the background.

Maybe you could elaborate on the problems you had with it?

I added the original spell checker to the front page as a link... It's in the same line as the preferences, search and other links. Thanks Slappy!

Slappy, try typing colour into the box. It rather pisses me off that a site which takes an international url for this sort of thing, with no blatant statment to say otherwise, can't include a basis word in the english language. For that regard alone it's pretty poor. Try typing football in the attached dictionary, it gives you American and not Association as standard, completely filing the second under s****r. Sorry, but it is a poor excuse for a dictionary.

I ould have suggested the OED online (which recognises all form of the language), but having checked that out it appears you have to register to use it, and I'm getting through because of a site wide IP registration.

Edit: Please realise any spelling mistake here are due to it being the early hours of the morning and too much ROH
