Okay, I have a 256 kbps DSL line at home and when I am downloading stuff from torrents, I only get about 5.6 kBps speeds on all my downloads. I have a feeling this is really slow.

Am I right? Is it supposed to be faster?? If so, then what can I do to speed them up?? I'm using the µTorrent client and I've got my bandwidth allocations set to high...but no dice.

Are you behind a firewall or router?

It is tediously slow. AFAIK, the apartment where I live (a student's box) has a 2 Mb DSL, but like with all DSL connections, the real up/down value is much lower. Mine is 56/56 kb/s and this is what I get on BT. Scale that to 0.25 Mb and you have your answer.

So you know, I have a ZA firewall and it has never caused me any problems. The only limiting factor might be your ISP, which might have set some artifical blocks to your connection -or then you have made a deal without reading the Terms of Service. Always read the ToS, because that's where they shovel crap to your face. ;)

I had problems when I installed my router, it was blocking remote connections, meaning I was only recieving local ones, which equals a slow speed.

No I am not behind a firewall or a router...

And I didn't actually get this connection...it was someone else mostly cuz I'm only home for 3 months on vacation from Uni so yeah...

Is there nothing I can do on my part to speed this up?? Because I am downloading a file 2.5 GB in size and it says ETA is 1 week and 3 days!!! That's if I leave my system on and connected all of that time!! I don't have that kind of time!

i would suggest you using bitcomet or any other 3rd party bt program (azerus, bitlord). i have luck with bitcomet so that's what i recommand. i have seen 100kb/s using bitcomet. typically, 10-20 kb/s is normal.

I'm using µTorrent...is that perhaps the reason I am getting poor performance from my downloads?? Where can I get BitComet?

I think client doesn't affect anything really much. Seeing that I've tested that, using one torrent on many clients just to see. And in Bittorrent, Bitcomet, Utorren, Azureus, they all had pretty much the same speed.
