He who firsts asks, ends up doing it. (errr...that's in the bible :p )

I don't really think SP needs to be in wikipedia.

There...now go submit it to wikipedia. :p  :rolling:

Yes you shall do so. But I fail to see the point in doing so.

Seems to me Tal should be the one to decide if an article on SP should be posted in Wiki.

I do think it is nice that people think SP important enough to post even in Wiki. It certainly has been important in my life.

I've always thought that having dedicated entries for gaming websites/communities in Wikipedia was a bit over the top, but it's been brought to my attention recently that pretty much everyone is doing it. The obvious ego-stroking aside, it's good publicity. But having anything in Wikipedia, especially something as prone to vandalism from the competing websites and/or sour individuals as a page like that about SP would be, would require more or less around the clock babysitting of the page to negate all the vandalism made to it.

So the end result, from my perspective, would not really be worth the time and effort required.

I usually don't even know I have any until they figuratively come around to punch me in the face or spit on me and/or SP behind my back (and I learn about it second-hand). It's only happened a few times over the years because such people prefer to do their dirty work without their target knowing anything about it, but often enough that I know there are a few people even in this neck of the woods that have serious problems with me and/or SP for one reason or another.

And unfortunately the Internet is a perfect place for spreading malicious rumours, uninformed gossip, badmouthing or hitting on stationary targets that are unwilling or unable to hit back. Whether there's actual malice or just plain ignorance involved, the end result is usually the same. Wikipedia becomes just another abuse tool to such people. Anyone running a community website with relatively high exposure has to grow a tough skin over the years to be able to ignore all such crap coming their way, as well as to recognize potential abuse opportunities and steer clear of them, if possible.

This isn't to say that I think Wikipedia is bad per se; it's just that it has enormous potential for easy abuse for anyone interested in abusing it...

I agree with Tal - especially on that it would just be an ego-stoke. SP isn't really that huge of an internet phenonemon for it to warrent a page on Wikipedia, I think.

Vandalism is of course quite possible too, and that's never fun. As hard as it may be to conceive of these people, I've run into those with negative ideas of SP before - and these were just the ones who disliked it from second hand information - I imagine the ones who were personally pissed off would be a lot more vocal in trashing the place...

(SP has a reputation for being unfriendly to n00bs, having plaques to humiliate people which they hand out every week, and a shipload of rules with Nazi moderaters, according to some...)

Firstly at a site which had taken most of its members from a site which has - uh, generally bad relations with SP - and at different small site where a few members criticised SP a bit.

Neither of these sites exist anymore.

I think our community has grown to be exceedingly newbie-friendly over the years. I can't remember the last time we've had any problems in this area. Those plaques are also used very little these days, so that not an issue either.

The rules, however, are there and will always be there, because they're the backbone of the community. BoM wouldn't be what it is without them. But I know that in consequence a large number of people rather post on far less moderated forums than on our own, but hey... there's a place for everyone on the Internet. The members that we have appreciate our higher level of moderation for the most part.

That's a shame, because the IotW plaque is usually hilarious when it happens.

I think I've seen it three or four time max actualy. And I don't think having the ItoW is a good thing anyway. Considering the sillyness in the RBB to be be more silly thant that...

I don't think the IotW Plaque is about being silly so much as being offensive and not obeying the rules, Tal and the Mods. It is funny though. :) I only remember one recently for someone whose name I forget and as far as I know is no longer with us. Once in a while someone gets it for a week, behaves and it is gone and forgotten.

I would be devastated, distraught, mortified, humiliated if I ever received the IotW.

As would I. You, of all people, getting that plaque would have me seriously questioning the sanity of those behind the High Hedge. Me I could see (especially in the early days; hoo boy :shake: ), but you? Never.

On topic, I'm with Tal on this. It's not worth the capacity for abuse. Somebody would have to be checking on it day after day to make sure noone screwed with it, and the benefits would be minimal at best. I'm also not sure that any website belongs on a dictionary-type site like wikipedia unless it was an already well-known one like Ebay.
