This forum's for technical problems, right? Hope so! Anyway, I've got this problem with a couple of video games, Baldur's Gate II among them, which is a travesty to me, cause I can't play it like it is right now. Okay, so, I have the volume slider a little bit under halfway, yet the sound effects like footsteps and attack sounds are extremely, annoyingly loud, to the point that I got fed up with them and haven't played the game in a while. The same goes for Splinter Cell. The sounds are very important to the stealth-aspect of the game-play, but some background sounds that should be in the *background* are drowning everything else out!

And, I know it's not the speakers, because it does the same thing on two different sets. It's either the sound card, or maybe the drivers need updating? I don't know. And no FAQ on the Net addresses such a problem or how to handle it, so maybe you guys know, since you're the place--the Sorcerer's Place, that is. In conclusion, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! And thanks much!

PS. If technical info on my comp is needed, then all I know is it’s an HP Pavilion XP789 using Windows ME. I’m kind of computer-illiterate, tech-wise. If I even knew what kind of sound card I had, things might be going much smoother for me right now.

Well, getting the latest drivers for your sound card is always the thing to do first. Then try turning off EAX to see if that helps matters.
