What is the best AC that a Bard 4 / Fighter 4 / RDD 4 should be able to achieve, using only the resources available in Shadows of Undrentide?

 

Heh, that's a tough question; who remembers all the equipment available in SoU. Still, I would guess you should be able to get something in the upper 20's, maybe even 30. Depends if you want to cast bard spells during battles, but I assume not, since you really do not have much levels in bard. I would wear a chainmail +2 (so you can get some Dex bonus, presumable you have at least 14 Dex with a bard build); so that's 7(from armor)+2(Dex) = 9. A medium shield +1 gives 3. You should be able to get at least +2 from a ring, there is a +3 natural armor amulet you can get from the Ao worshippers (and if you don't have that one, there are others with +2), there are some boots which give you +1 or +2 dodge armor bonus,... so that is another 3(shield) + 2(ring) + 3 (amulet) +2 (boots) = 10. With armor and dex bonus, this gives 19.

Then, I hope you put some points in tumble (I think it is a class skill for bards) so you can have max of +3 dodge bonus from there (at lev 12, you can have 15 skill points in tumble, assuming the bard class was the last one you leveled up).

 

Ah, good. I have managed to get up to 32 now, but I was wondering if I was missing anything (because some people always manage to get really awesome ACs that I can never do).

Based on your analysis, I am happier that I have done OK with my character's AC now. You're right that I don't cast spells in battle, but I do use long lasting ones like Protection from Evil that I can cast upon waking and changing armour.

 

Anything over 30 is very good in SoU (in my opinion). You don't even need it that much; for most of the minion battles, you can drop the shield and yield a two handed weapon for better effect. (I gave my druid a scythe; he looks very bada** )

So, what sort of items are you using? I am curious if I was close with my estimate, or way off.

 

I can't remember because I don't have the game open. But I have 14 dexterity and 15 points in tumble. An amulet of natural armour that often has to come off to be replaced by the amulet of greater health. +2 deflection bonus from something (either a cloak or a ring - I keep getting that message about the bonuses not stacking). And some chainmail +3? Oh, and a shield of mirroring (large +3?)

As for the AC not being enough, it still feels like I get whacked hard and often (especially by that dratted Greater Wind Zombie).
