Since everyone and their grandmother is posting impressions of the upcoming D&D MMORPG, I thought we might as well join the club with our own take on the game in its beta stage. teekc, one of our regulars, presents his impressions and screenshots of the beta as he has played it right here. Check it out!

Although you don't earn xp for straight kills, there are some areas that have "encounters" of a fixed number of a given type of creature (3 kobolds, 4 or 5 scorpions, etc.) that give xp when they have all been slain. Once located, these types of encounters would be a good way to gain a rank or two if you needed it to be able to solo a given quest or area.

I was not accepted into the beta, so this information is based on the Stress Test. If this has changed, I apologize.

From my information, it seems it hasn't changed and the "kill everything" scenario is intended to be one of the ways in which XP is gained, apart from other ways to finish the same area. I don't know, however, if there are supposed to be any areas that you can finish only by means of slaughtering everything that moves.

The perspective of receiving more quest XP as opposed to individual kill XP is appealing, but I have my reservations. After all, fighting enemies is supposed to bring experience and improve your fighting capacity, so individual enemies felled should matter. Awarding XP for quests only is more realistic in that you don't earn with the sword points that you spend on Spellcraft or Persuade.

What had better be avoided is the impression that the felled enemy's life force magically enhances our character or some such. That impression is reinforced by awarding XP only for kills, not for victories. XP should be given only for victories and there should be no XP specifically for killing, as opposed to defeating someone or something in combat, assassinating or whatever it takes, rather than the abstract and removed act of inserting a blade between someone's ribs.
