[IMG] I'm considering starting a new game and soloing (even though i found it pretty hard completing the game with a party of six) :( .

I was thinking to give me a feel for it i could start with my Human Fighter from my last completed game. My guess though is that it would be pretty damn hard to solo as a fighter.

Anyone got any advice  , like a good class / Dual class to solo with (starting a completely new game with Level 1 person), and any tactics that might be helpfull?!?! Cheers

multiclass Thief/Mage. I like the F/T as well, but since you are soloing and had a hard time with 6 characters, spells may be useful.
If you really want a Fighter, then do a Fighter/Thief.
    Lots of backstabbing.

One advantage of soloing is that you level quicker. I normal fighter would be pretty hard so I would suggest what Jack Funk said with the Fighter/Thief or Fighter/Mage.

Having soloed a Gnome fighter using Vampire's Revenge as his only weapon on Insane difficulty, I honestly cannot call this game difficult any more. Of course, I did far from everything, and used lots of cheese, but still...

Anyway, a fighter/thief using bows and a weapon suitable for backstab should be able to handle most situations, as should a thief/mage. Fighter/mage or ranger/cleric (a friend of mine soloed one to great effect) may be good choices too.

If you want more of a challenge, try a pure class character of some kind.

    Hope that helps. :)

[IMG] There is one encounter in this game which I consider extremely difficult when soloing; the duchal palace when you have limited time to defeat the baddies before they kill some characters who must survive.

I solved it by filling the room with monsters - from a Monster Summoning Wand - to the extent that it was so full they couldn't move.

Any other (less cheesy?) solution would be very welcome! :)

You could try to turn the dopplegangers against each other by using charm or domination. They have pretty good saves, but if you can make some of them attack you instead of the Dukes, charming two or three should be enough. Worked for me at least.

    That's un-cheesy enough? :p

Do a fighter/mage or thief/mage- You could try a fighter/mage/thief, because you effectively start the game at level 3- I wouldnt go through the game with a re-imported character because there is just no satisfaction in it!

When I went solo through BG1, I didnt start the Nashkel mines until I was about level 5, until then I just mooched around doing sub quests- I found this useful, but it is obviously down to preference. :)

[IMG] The Nashkel mines are easy even at level 2-3 so just run through them as soon as you can. I too put off going in there the first time I played BG but really there's no reason not to get it done.

[IMG] i have now restarted using a f/t. Have gotten to chapter 3 (after nashkel mines) and had a sudden thought.

If you start with a pure fighter and wait till you get advanced weapon specialisation, if you then dual to thief do you keep the advanced skill or do you lose it??

Figter - needed for the good THACO, otherwise how would you harm enemies?
Thief - there are some traps, and it's worth to stealing too. (pickpocket Drizzt for a +3 sword)
And if you alone the shadow is your best friend.
Mage - some eneimes can be harmed only with magic. Not realy neccesary, but in the begining, you can save much money on identify. And you can get 2 Ring of Wizardy at the end, which grants you 20 1st level spell :)

If you don't want to play with the ToSC, the mage is not neccesary, but in Durlag's tower you are lost without spellcasting...and trap detecting too... :)

I have just started a F/M/T it's realy cool!!! It can do everything.

I also solo with a Fighter/Thief/Mage and it is rather easy. With Stealth you can ignore all those xvarts, hobgoblins, kobolds etc.... you can use Long Sword and Backstab....

I'm done all BG-quest except for Sarevoks coronation (hardest part for solo) and I'm now doing the Tales of the Sword Coast maps. It's not really hard when you use the right tactics and use some potions and protective spells for the tough fights.

When you want to make it a little bit more easy, you can download a XP-cap remover so you don't stop leveling at 89000 XP.

I too am soloing with a Fighter/theif/mage. It is an extremely powerful character. Backstabbing is the best part. If you do solo as a F/T/M, make sure that you stock up on Strength and Consitution to the max. Don't worry about Dexterity or Charisma because very early on in the game you can get the Gauntlets of Brawling(set Dexterity to 18) and a cloak that gives you a +2 Charisma bonus. In the same area as the Guantlets(Gnoll Stronghold), there is a tome that'll raise your Charisma by 1 permanantly. Make sure you strength is very, very high though. 18/90's, around that, because through the entirety of the game, you'll be fighting with melee. Bows just don't work well with solos. Early on, you should pick-pocket Drizzt for his Frostband +3(+2AC, +3 THAC0. Note: you need to be of good alignment in order to use this sword). You can't get a sword much better than that. Graywolf also has a Long Sword +2. A very good sword, one that you can play with all the way through. You can get it fairly early on also. Also, make sure that your F/T/M has good Int. and Wis. because spellcasting comes in handy later on. 15 outta do it, but that's pretty low. I think that soloing is actually easier than a full party because the one character is alot stronger than any in a six person party. With a six people, everyone is weaker and easier to kill. I always reload when one person dies, so I find soloing not as hard as I thought.

    Good Luck

[IMG] I agree. I was only doing the Gnoll stronghold lastnight with my level4 F/T and remembered back to when i first did it. Back then, at that point, i had a party of 4 (Fighter, Kalihd, Jahera, Minsc) and i remember that i was getting owned by the gnolls. This time with my solo f/t it was me doing the owning. Likewise some of the other evil parties that you meet.

I'm guessing though that once i reach a point where everyone is casting spells at me that i'm going to have a fair ammount of trouble.

Are there any good ways of 'avoiding' spells? (In the same way as the cloak of balduran gives you some magic protection.)

Avoiding spells? Minor Globe of Invulnrability(lvl 4 spell). Although you'll not be able to cast it with a f/t. I suppose get your Stealth up to 100%, then use the boots of speed. You can be out of their sight before they can get a spell off. Backstabbing is the best way to go. My F/T/M has a 3X multiplier and my average damage for a backstab is around 50. That's some major damage. I've got a good THACO too, so I usually hit them in one shot. The coolest thing about backstab was I bought a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength and hid in shadows, walked up to Drizzt, backstabbed him for 45! I ran away, hid in shadows again, Backstabbed him for 50. He was toast! Two hits? That's too easy! It only cost me a couple thousand too.
