Has anyone ever tried to solo in IWD2 Heart of Fury mode using a 1st level character? I'm doing it with a fighter (bow expert, to no surprise), and it's working quite well despite the fact that a single goblin takes 10 minutes to kill and may end up killing quest-important NPCs.

I have heard that it is POSSIBLE, but your most deadly enemy will not be the killer goblins, or even the fusion-powered ice troll. No, your main problem will be dying from the lethal spell 'Creeping Bore-doom' after spending a whole day just clearing the Targos Docks. Even the guy in the boat will probably shoot you himself after you go and ask to rest for the millionth time.

Haha! I know I would if it was I who he asked.
This is even more pointless than the guy who thought he could complete BG1 with a mage without using any magic or magic equipment.

You cant possibly have played IWD2 that much.
I mean, I´ve played BG1 almost every day since it came out and the thought of completing it with a LV1 char has never even crossed my mind. Why? Because it would be no fun. And I can already tell you, you will not be able to complete IWD2 with any uncheated LV1 character. There are others than you that uses a bow to you know. Not to mention magic...

With a bow, yes. Without a bow, no. Unless sneak attacking everyone and reloading when it fails. Maybe magic and sleeping after every opponent. Maybe. With a melee character it seems impossible to me. And I'm not a poor player. After all, I'm the guy who played the Awesome Paladin/Wizard :shake: :tie:

Are you saying "Maybe" to being able to complete the game Chev?

Are you suggesting that you try to finish the game with a L1 character or starting HoF with a L1 character?

That seems an impossible task. Good luck though, tell us how it goes.

Duke Eltan, I don't really play archer characters. More often than not, I have one in my party, but it's not like I would solo one. Well, I have to solo a fighter(4)/sorcerer(x) character, so I might as well try in HoF first.

My paladin/wizard didn't work in HoF when starting as paladin - for obvious reasons pertaining to STR 14 DEX 10 and CON 10. As a wizard might even survive. Especially as first kill means level up. Well, time will show.

A propos, where do you get a bow in HoF? Is that possible any other way than looting it from a goblin body?

There's a shortbow right south of the first two soldiers you meet lying on the ground. You don't need to kill anyone to get there safely.

Well, actually, I'm currently using a heavy crossbow (the only one in Targos, I guess), and if I remember correctly my level progression was 1->3->5->6->7... and at level 7 goblins are STILL tough. Still, I don't see why so many people are prepared to rubbish the idea. It IS fun, for me at least :)

Now I´m following. I thought you meant that you were gonna stay at level 1 through all the game. But since that aint the case I´m sure you´ll succeed if you just have some patience.

What I meant is starting with a 1st-level character instead of a 15th-level one.

Wouldn't a cleric count as a melee character? If he didn't use spells other than to just heal himself or just buff...but not both...would be the same...and MUCH easier!

Battleguard of Tempus wouldn't lose much to a fighter, especially at the beginning. The first level earned could be given to fighter and with also human class selected, that would give you 3 feats by level 2, or 4 by level 3, for that matter. Power attack, cleave, specialisation, improved crits, great cleave... you know the order. And clerical magic with some very awesome domain spells. Just 4 levels of fighter, no need for more.

The same trick could be used for fighter(4)/paladin of Helm(3)/sorcerer(x), getting huge saves reasonably quickly, finishing off the 4 fighter levels also quickly and so on. At the end, ubertelepathic melee with Mordenkainen's... or daily bread melee with the Holy Avenger. But it would require some awesome physique. Ah, BTW, evasion from rogue or monk would also do here. Maybe even rogue and starting as rogue for the skill points? How nice... Evasion, divine grace (saves), other divinities, specialisation and ubersorcerous power. Oh well...

Could a melee character get through? I dont think it could be possible.

What use would 'Great Cleave' be in HOF where it would be impossible to ever kill two creatures with two hits (even critical ones)?

With six attacks per round, it may be possible. With feat-breeding fighter levels and so much XP as you get in HoF, it's not a great expense. I agree, it may well be put off until later or even cancelled out completely if you don't have feats at a cheap price.

It was pretty simple when I was trying a L1 character. It was just a cleric with all spells devoted to summon monster I, which just happens to be a goblin, evenly matched with the suckers you fight.

I like greater cleave because it helps againt trolls (if using fire/acid damaging weapon)

    troll knocked down
    (cleave)
    dead troll
    (greater cleave)
    attack another

I tried it and I have to say I found it nigh impossible. At level 1 my BAB was too low to even hit the goblins and that was using the bow with a dexterity modifier of +4 (18). Oh and by the way
In HOF there are too many goblins around that area to get it safely. Even if you can manage to hide you still become visible when picking it up.
