I highly recommend it based on:

Good points: fantastic story, great music, the best main character & NPC development of any RPG games so far. This is terms of stats, history and personality. Less reliance on pointless combat, lots of attention to detail. Good humour yet achieved in a very dark believable setting. Oh yes, you really end up caring about the characters too.

Bad Points: less choice in terms of NPCs and character classes, some repetitive tasks, a bit slow to start with, strong story reduces replayability. Setting can be a bit strange for dungeons & dragons obsessives. However, none of these should deter you from playing one of the best(possibly 'the best') RPG ever.

Positive: It was RPG game of the year in '99. If you like playing with stats, raising them mostly, 1pt added to ability scores every level, great story and really neat characters(NPC's that is).No xp cap.

Negative: Only 1 game. No expansion. No sequel. No add on. No nothing after you win.Pretty linear.

[IMG] You definitly want to try this one. Great characters, story, system. Only real negative for me is drawing close to the end and having nothing in reserve. Guess I'll try again as a mage.

This might sound really strange, but the one thing that has put me off is... the box. Everything I've read about it makes me think I'd love the game (especially Slappy's description above!), but the box graphics just look so horrific that I have been turned off buying it every time I pick it up in the store. Is the character you play evil or is he just really ugly? And is there a lot of blood and gore in the game? It does have a warning for gore but then, so does BG which doesn't bother me. Generally, I hate horror movies and horror novels - would you say the game fits into this type of genre? Advice greatly appreciated!

[IMG] Box art should be the least of your problems. :p
The guy on the box is you, an immortal amnesiac that has seen more battles than 10 generations of men. You can guess where he got all those scars...

There's no more blood and gore in the game than there is in all others like BG etc, but there's a lot more of undead, zombies etc especially in the starting area (logically, it's a mortuary).
But this is Planescape, and the whole setting is like that. Some people love it, some hate it. But for the $15 or so the game costs, you really lose nothing if you try it yourself.
