Should I get NWN?

[IMG] As the title says I’m pondering whether or not to get it. My computer is now working smoothly after 2 months of it messing me around and me screaming obscenities at it. My computer has the power to play NWN - AMD K6 850 Mhz with 32 mb graphic card and 256 mb of ram running on Win98SE. So that's one problem out of the way. Next is the money problem I can get it for about £40 I think in most of the local game-stores (unless I can persuade my parents to let me buy online, in which case I’ll support SP, and finally get a custom avatar  ). I can get the money or I can wait till my birthday (less than a month - 26th August) and ask for it as a present.

My next query is whether or not I will like NWN. I like a strong story and I prefer city crawling to dungeon crawling but like a mix of both. The other aspect is the toolset. Every game I have got within 2 days I’ve started looking for mods, edits, hacks (in the change the game to make it better not the grr :nolike: cheat kind) and assorted other ways to make my own levels/variations for the game. The last game I did this for was OFP which came with it's own editor but I found a massive fanbase online for downloading various new units, levels and most importantly to help teach me the scripting language.

I would like to play multiplayer but I only have a 56k modem, would I be getting massive lag? However I’d probably get the chance to play network round friends houses occasionally which would be good :)

So whaddaya think? Should I get it and if so when?

Sure, I'd say get it. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though the lack of a full party was a drawback for me. I hope the online play with the SP gang will be a blast.

The 56K modem is supposed to be fine for playing online, maybe just not hosting a game, but I wouldn't know the reality since I have cable.

There are several city maps and many more dungeon/cave maps, so I think you'd be satisfied. I enjoyed the many stories, but I have heard som complain about the story...

[IMG] - The 56k modem part is certainly negative.
    - Which graphics card is it that you have?

If money is a concern my advice is do not buy NWN (for a while). The SP campaign is IMO not good, so quite clearly you buy NWN for the Multiplayer part.

If I were you I'd save my money for IWD2 hoping it comes out in the next few months.

That's true, the SP story is not as good as what is found in previous Bioware games. It's still better than what you'll find in most games though, so don't worry about that. Plus, if you don't like the story, write one up then DM your friends through it.

[IMG] Bought it this afternoon for £34.99. Only played on it for about an hour and a half.

First half hour spent trying to play when items look green and wierd with lines through. Turned down the textue level and everything looked normal and somehow better (reverse thinking  ). Actually this was the second half hour (the first was spent making my character). Then actually played properly for another half hour. Getting quite bad slow-down in places :( Then spent the last 5 minutes (my internet doesn't work before 6) messing around with the toolset and i don't care if i like the SP campaign or not (not far enough into it to have decided yet), i would have bought it just for the toolset :D so much power, so much creativity, so much .... muhahahha

Some questions though what can i turn off/lower to make it faster (im not really bothered about how it looks, just how fast and flowing it is :speedfreak: ). Also which is the best camera mode in your opinions?

Earl Grey - I have a 32 mb onboard S3 ProSavage card. As for the money i got it as an early birthday present for my mum.

And i found out it's a 750 mhz AMD not an 850 mhz but being AMD there isnt much difference between 750 mhz AMD and 800 Mhz Pentium. (except AMD is better, cept for the bigger fans)

[IMG] to make it go faster just turn all the graphix to min :)
there are actuelly several other posts on how to tweek things to get it going better. (things on your computer like scan disc defrag etc..)
the tool set does rock :) it doesn't work so well on my computer though :(

as for camera mode well i for one had my left hand on the zoom keys for pretty much all the game zooming in and out as the situation calls :)
i like to have full zoom for combat mode with my melee chars although slightly further away is better for spellcasters :D then when traveling i would go to full view so i could see where i was going :) zoom in zoom out zoom in zoom out zoom in zoom out  i love the zoom feature! all games should have Zoom!!

Another way to make it run faster: Turn off the T&L. This made the biggest difference in my speed. Also, I'd up that RAM. 512MB should help quite a bit.
