shadow dragon .! help !!!!!!!

ive gotten to the shadow dragon in the temple ruins and i have picked up the ward stone ,do i have to kill the dragon i mean is it plot related ,if i do what do i gain and how hte bloody hell do you do it cos im thinking its a little tough,tips please id like to try to destroy it using legitimate tactics not through exploiting bugs in the game

You do not have to destroy the Shadow Dragon. In fact, you probably want to just leave it alone for right now, and wait until you're tougher, and want to create Crom Faeyr.

 

Lower magic resistance and hit it with spells

 

Spells and your sword of course. Nothing like a good blade in the stomach of a Dragon as it roars its final cry of life.

Hmmm.....you know, everytime I think of dragons or know I will be about to encounter them face to face, I wish I had taken the wrod of a wise man and chosen Dragons as a racial enemy.

But then...my mind has already been made up....

 

My fight with this dragon was kind of strange. I put lots of protective and stat boosting spells on my main character (cavalier), I used Lower Resistance and Magic Missiles, and Jaheira summoned some beasts, elementals and Insect Plague (to interrupt spell casting, apparently doesn't work against dragons?). I got it down to Near Death when it managed to make itself immune to magical weapons. Even Corsamyr +5 had no effect. None of my characters were injured(!), but all except my cavalier were chaosed. The only thing that hurt the dragon were those insects constantly doing 1 damage to it. And that's what finally killed it. LOL, a dragon killed by some insect stings .

A few tidbits...

That you can't interrupt Dragon's spellcasting is quite normal and in accordance to standard pen&paper AD&D rules. Most dragons gain these spells as "spell-like abilities" and can use them *at will*. No hand wiggling or silly rhyme chanting, they just "will" those magicks into existence.

One life saving property of "protection from magical weapons" is that it is mutually exclusive with "protection from normal weapons". Yep, a wizard or creature protected from magical weapons will get normal damage from plain sticks and butterknives. Often switching to ranged weapon and plain ammo will save the day (unless there's also a protection from normal missiles in effect, alas, that WILL work together with protection from magical weapons), and if NOTHING else works (what self-respecting level 10+ adventurer carries a non-magical sword as backup? ;P ) I've been known to finish those wicked mages with bare fists....

Having the arrogant loudmouthed beasts in all its wickedness finally slain by common, lowly insects is a wonderful piece of poetic justice, though

thanks, that was what I figured (about dragon spellcasting). I would have used normal ammo, except that all my ranged characters were under the influence of the Chaos spell, and the cavalier cannot use such a dishonorable method of combat. Next time, I'm taking a normal two-handed sword with me. Fists, yes, should have thought of that...

 

Does poisen damage work on Dragons or are save vs Death just to good?

 

just tought id share this i found a way of defeating him relatively easily,i trapped the room around him heavily with yoshimo laid 4 traps slept then laid some more ,then some more bout 10 in all i think then i protected my characters and hit him with wand of fire thing and he moved forward in to traps and died.

so is this way cheating or just exploiting the game i kinda wish i hadnt beaten him this way now i feel i let myself down a bit i may go back and try a more conventional method like hitting him with a sword

 

I think it's exploiting the game in my opinion. What dragon would let you walk around setting up traps, watch you do so, then return to set more up and have him walk into them as if he had no idea they were laid before him.

If I had a ranger, I'd put his racial enemy as Golem. They are frequent and tough.

 

I haven't yet met a Golem I couldn't take down, although I did not fight the one in De'Arnise Hold since all I did was cast Sanctuary on Jaheira and had her walk in and out without any trouble. I wish I had taken them down, perhaps in another game.

Golems, Dragons or Vampires are your best bet as a Ranger to take for a racial enemy.
