[IMG] Hmmm...reading the Manual, it says IWD2 is "Anything But a Hack & Slash game!", but from my experiences of the first installment, and my game up till now (Horde Fortress), the only roleplaying I've done is getting more rewards through Diplomacy.

What's your opinion on how IWD handles roleplaying and is there any good bits to come?
    (no spoilers please)

Yeah this is really funny. The same thing writes for BG2,thus it's true for BG2,but not for IWD2, IWD 2 is based on killing all the time.

I actually enjoyed the story of IWD2, an interesting emphasis on bigotry and the various responses to it.

I also appreciated how the developers brought the point that the ultimate villains, much like Sauron and Saruman of LOTR fame, weren't always evil. Probably they had even better excuse.

There are points in the game where you do make personal choices based on the moral compass you think your characters would guide themselves by.

But yeah ... relative to BG2, it's definitely more hack and slash.

    Err...'scuse me?

Aha, well I realised that sometime coming out of Targos. Thing is, I was wondering if there was a really roleplayable part of the game; not just conversationwise. Personally I found most of the conversation to be quite lacking; only pieces depending on Class/Race to be standing out.

My apologies, I didn't read all the way through the post. I took a second look and I took out that particular sentence. You have to admit, viewed in isolation, it's easy to see where I got that concern.

But yes, there's definitely good and evil paths in the game.

[IMG] I fail to see your point? What particular statement in my original post "the original poster" seemed to give you the opinion that I was new? I have been on this site for much longer, and I have played through all the games here except Pools Of Radiance and half of IWD2. I do not consider myself "new".

Regardless, ontopic are there any slightly more roleplayable elements in Icewind Dale 2? Or am I limited to what has been said?

Gopher, not extra ordinarily role playing, outside combat.

And, to be honest, it's not even as much hack and slash roleplaying as the Original. It's like, they tried to mix the role playing aspects of BG2 and the dungeon crawling roleplaying of IwD.

It just didn't work with me.

There's a few minor puzzles and quests that give you a dialogue choice for your race or class, but they are singular. There are a larger number of them than compared to IwD, but they don't change an entire path through a chapter.

The dialogue checks are fairly broad; there usually 3 different ways to meet the necessary requirement. Charisma, diplomacy, or intelligence/wisdom.

Most people who are only playing IWD2 for the first time are new, so simply reading the post and asking for no spoilers threw me off. I failed to notice your custom portrait. Again, I apologize and no offence was intended.

Having said that, there are points where there's more to it than conversation threads. As in, whose side you take and what you're actually going to do.

[IMG] Heh, don't worry about it Beren. :) [edit] Spelled your name wrong.

Well, it seems IWDII lacked what I was looking for. *sigh* Back to Ps:T it is then. ;)
Though I'll still complete IWD just for the sake of having said I have, hehe.

    Gopher.

Do you feel that PS:T has more roleplay value? I'm not familiar with the game. Is it based on DND rules at all? I'm just wondering if I need to get it.

As for roleplaying, I suppose it does not bother me much, I really loved the way that IWD2 was linked in storywise with the original.

PS:T is an excellent game with tremendous roleplay value, but that's off topic. Check the Torment forum & SP for more info on it. (And please don't start a new topic on "should I buy it", there must be two dozen of them there already.)

Gopher, there's more chance for role-playing when you actually get somewhere in the game, the Horde Fortress is just the beginning. How much do you want to role-play is up to you though, I suppose. Considering you make the whole party yourself, much of the interaction of the BG2 type will not be present by default. But you know that in advance, so simply comparing it to BG2 is pointless. And there's hardly any more fighting in IWD2 than in BG2 & ToB, compared as a whole. There are just more different sidequests because everyone and their grandmother wants you to do something for them.
