[IMG] I know the rogue is not meant for frontline battle. He is most effective when attacking from behind or using missile weapons. Given this, is it worth it to give a rogue ambidexterity and two weapon fighting or should he just take other skills? All comments and opinions are welcome.

The few times I messed around with backstabbing, I loaded my rogue with two weapons.

For a while, I didn't realize the weapon in my offhand couldn't be used for backstabbing. I think it was that moonblade or something. It said, in the description, that due to it's nature it could not be used to backstab.

And it seemed like my rogue wasn't doing as much damage as before. Soon as I notice this description (I think I was just doing routine swapping of good weapons to the most proficent user, after a major store buyout or something). Sure enough, as soon as I swapped out weapons, he started seriously whacking people again. Doing two 60+ hits and whatnot.

Yes; it is a good idea for your rogue to use two weapons for backstabbing. It might change if you get a good two handed weapon, but for chapter 1, 2, and most of 3, you don't really have any good +3/+4 two handed weapons.

the only problem is that you can't combine two handed fighting with weapon finesse. so be sure your rogue has a high enough STR to compensate not only for the fact that he can't use his dex, but also for the penalties for fighting with two weapons. otherwise, go nuts.

[IMG] Would it be better to give him one level of ranger then? Of course he would have to stick to light armor.

yes, one level of ranger might be the best method to get ambidex and dual weapon fighting feats...

(as an aside, why would you want your rogue wearing anything *but* light armor anyway?)

I think rngr1/roguex is one of the most popular multiclass builds, in fact. start as a rogue for the extra skills at start, then take your rngr level, then progress the rest of the way as rogue. gives you a small boost in hit points (can be important early on) and gives you the free ambidex and dual weapon fighting feats for free, plus a favored enemy selection that you will get bonuses when fighting.

I have also heard of a rngr3/roguex/ftr4 to get weapon specialization without the 20% exp penalty (favored class must be rogue) if you want more of a tank but still dual weild.

Yes you can. Weapon Finesse can be used when the secondary hand is either empty or with a small weapon. I had a Rogue, dual-wielding short swords with Weapon Finesse and she was a killer.
I always use Rogues for melee combat, much more than for ranged combat. They fight extremely well and with the right feats they are very, very deadly. Also, contrary to popular belief, a high STR is great for a melee Rogue, even if you are using Weapon Finesse, as you still get the damage bonus, and a Rogue with STR to match DEX is really good fun. I was playing with a 16 STR/16 DEX/12 CON Dwarf Rogue for a bit and he was ridiculously dangerous in a fight. Keeping a Rogue out of melee is a waste of the class, I think, as their Sneak Attacks are incredibly useful, and when you start adding in the SA-based feats, things get very nasty.

[IMG] Thanks for all your input.

Krysalyn: I said that in case someone might remind me that I shouldn't use medium or heavy armor. ;)

    Again, thanks all.
