I've yet to play trialofLM but once I'm done i plan to remove the game. How do i save the characters so I can import them back if when I choose to replay he game at a later date?

Should i keep the saved game and character folders only or is there other folders/files i need to keep

The character files are sufficient. Just keep in mind that bag content isn't transfered.
Export your characters manually (When you look at your character there's an option for this) and backup the 6 character files.
When entering the original or HoW final automatic character saves (IWD1-6 or HOW1-6) are created.

Additionally keeping a saved game doesn't hurt.

And make sure you have the portraits if you use custom ones for the characters in question.

if you use backup savegames remember that you need the same mods/patches to use them later. so it really doesnt hurt to write up what you used :p

if you used a mod and import characters etc, they will loose all tihngs added by said mod and so on. at times this can make characters unusable in a fresh installed version unless you use exactlly same mods.

usually no problem, just thought i say it in case.
