[IMG] Ok, every .rar file I download opens as a notepad! What's the cause?

Probably because you've once opened a .rar file with the "open with" function, and asked it to always open .rar files with notepad?

I'm guessing you never installed winrar.

I think Olimkirg has the exact cause. The Great Snook however already is more going in the direction of going towards a solution. In order to assign the .rar files to winrar (as they should, or some other unrarrer), there are a number of solutions:

    1) install winrar if it's not yet installed
    2) reinstall winrar (not recommended)
    3) open winrar and in options->settings->integration select the extensions you want to open with winrar when doubleclicking and then hit OK (recommended)
    4) if you know how, go delete the .rar association in the windows options so you can again select the default program when doubleclicking a .rar file (not recommended)

Or, on a similar note to option 4, you could just go into control panel, folder options, file types, select the rar file types and change the associated program back to Winrar.

Personally, that is what I would do provided that you already have Winrar installed.

    1: Download winRAR
2: go to an archive and right click, go properities and if it isnt defualted on winRAR set all archives to be opened with winRAR... do .zip's too while your at it.

Shift-Rightclick a .rar file, choose correct program from the "Open With" menu.

And oh, I'd not suggest using WinRar for anything but RAR files.

The only thing with WinRar is that it is only a 30 day trial, and unless you buy it, you can't get it anymore.

@ Saber - Well, maybe not legally but I just checked my usual newsgroups and found at least 25 different postings of cracked copies. ;)

Last time I checked, it still worked even after the trial expired, it just came up with a nag screen every time.

Same for me Tal, I still use it. Winzip always did the same thing as well when I used that. Winrar is far superior though.

WinRar and WinZip both work after the 30 day trial period. I also get the 'nag' screen whenever I open a .rar file.

Yeah, what olimikrig said about 'always open with Notepad? Y/N' happened to me, too. I forgot to uncheck that box and now my .wav files open in Notepad. It was a slow day. :o
