Quick question about dual classing

    Let's say you have a character who is a thief, and dual classes to a fighter at level 7. This means that he will lose all his thieving abilities until reaching level 14 (ie. 7 levels of fighter). Who detects and disarms traps in the meantime?

    No. Your character will regain his or her thieving abilities when reaching fighter level 8.

    You need one more level. It may be misleading because thieves level up much quicker than fighters.

    In the meantime if you don't have another thief no one will detect traps (I soloed the game with a ranger once so don't worry too much, it can be done without a thief you will lose some loot but that's it). That's a good reason to pick a multiclass instead.

    Dual class works best if you don't take too many levels before switching classes.

    A Cleric or Paladin makes for a good Detector if you don't have the metagame knowledge or don't want to abuse reloading to the point where you're reloading every time you set off a nasty trap like those Static Charge ones.

    Realize your levels in your new class are based on the experience point table for the new class. So while you will need another 8 levels, it will only be ~125,000 experience points (as opposed to needing to get to the experience point total for a 15th level character).

    Usually when dual classing the fighter levels are used to boost a character's hit points and basic fighting abilities. In IWD, dual classing is excellent for mages and druids -- take the fighter levels first, then shift to either mage or druid (as desired). The additional hit points are amazing for the mage, while the ability to have *** in one or two weapon types is very useful for the druid. dual classing is especially useful for a druid because of their skewed leveling.

    When dual classing ALL the abilities of the first class are lost until you obtain one level higher in the new class. This includes weapon proficiencies and any proficiency points put into weapons learned in the old class are wasted (they do not add to your old totals).

    I tend to find thieves are best multiclassed (they gain in fighting ability and backstab multiplier at the same time -- plus you really don't need a dedicated thief). Good points to dual from a fighter are 3rd level (*** in one weapon), 7th level (extra half attack and another *), and 9th level (maxed hit points). In IWD I'd dual to a mage at 3rd level and a druid at 7th.
