Putin: Powerhungry or Peaceloving President?

    Tell me if I'm wrong. Each time a major catasrtophe occurs in Russia, the government doesn't seem to know how to react, or act.
    Vladimir Putin gains more and more power since 1999. My question is: Would he really give himself the power for the good of the country or is he just using these disasters to satisfy his hunger?

    The problem is probably that they don't have the resources, not that they don't know how to act. Adding as much extra security as people in the US are enjoying would costs billions Russia doesn't have. Not to mention enforcing it throughout the entire Russia would be next to impossible, it's just too big and problematic a country.

    As for power, in this case, I think it's both. Putin will even further centralize the power because he now has a good excuse (security) and can justify doing it, and because as a powerful leader, he naturally wants even more power. Luckily Russia has enough trouble keeping order in its own backyard so they aren't going on any external crusades against terror.

    I certainly admire the man's charisma. Would that I knew the answer to this question here myself though. He actually reminds me of Sarevok, being both physically and mentally suited for being a great leader.

    I guess only future will tell his real alignment.

    He's former KGB, so I suppose he has a better grasp on what's going on in the whole security thinng than the average politcal leader...

    Now, I'd say that what hee's up to is making his presidency a permanent thing... I thought so in 1999, and am still thinking so. Can't really say any factual reasons why I think so, but that's what I think anyway.

    Or words to that effect anyway...

    Putin is a control freak. He is already a semi-dictator and controls much of what is said and written in Russia. However, most Russians are aware of this and accept as Putin doesnt seem to abuse his power too much. One should also keep in mind that there isnt really any good alternative to him. All this is not to say that he is doing a bang up job and that he hasnt handled the entire Chechnya thing horribly but that in general he may be a powerhungry despot but that he uses that power in a way most Russians agree with.
