I have a few problems and questions, which are pretty varied.

    1. In 3.5E, bards can cast spells without a chance of spell failure in light armor (up to chain shirts). Does this apply in ToEE?

    2. Do druids have the choice of spontaneous casting like Clerics, but with Summon Nature's Ally instead of Cure or Inflict? (So far, haven't tried with a druid?)

    3. In ToEE, I see that there are a dearth of chests, shelves, racks, etc. from which you can pluck weapons, gold, books, keys, etc., as oppposed to, say, Baldur's Gate II. Is there intentionally a bunch of shelves and bookcases that serve no game purpose?

    4. Sometimes I can't loot bodies, sometimes I can't. I read in another thread I'll have to get a patch for this. Have I missed out on a lot by not being able to loot the bodies, of, say, the brigands?

    5. I'm level three, and have something at 200 gold and few masterwork or magic items. I'm slain my share of bandits and monsters. You'd think I'd be getting something nice by now. Does this have to do with #4?

    6. The first time I played, I selected Alhandra. On a whim, I had her participate in a drinking contest, and she became an ex-paladin. What other silly, non-evil things are there that can make a paladin lose status? Will Clerics have to worry about this?

    7. I'm having trouble find greatswords and greataxes in Hommlet. My Fighter is currently waving a scythe around. He looks silly. Help? (And how about longbows and composite shortbows?)

    8. Is there a use for the Heal skill besides stabilizing dying characters?

    9. I can't seem to figure out the use of detect magic. Does it have its uses, or are you not going to not miss out on much without it?

    10. I can't seem to find this Mathildle with whom someone in Hommlet wants to set up with the widower farmer. Where is she in the village?

    11. One of the quests seems to necessitate a Heal spell, which the local Clerics can't seem to provide? Will my Clerics eventually be able to cast this spell?

    12. One of the quests seems to be about a carpenter who wants Marek to convert to the "Old Faith." Jaroo says there "has to be balance," which seems to mean I also need to get the church's approval. However, the local Clerics don't seem to have anything to say about it.

    13. Am I going to have to buy differently sized items for halflings and gnomes?

Thanks for bearing with me. Unfortunately, the manual seems to be of very little help. I know about pen and paper D&D - but ToEE seems to be taking a few liberties and keeping a few throwbacks from 3E.

I can answer some of your questions...

    3. yup, there's lots of non-manipulative bookcases, shelves, etc. in ToEE.

    4. Not much, but the problem could occur again. I would consider patching, and also getting the co8 patch (I believe it's a SP hosted site?).

    5. Don't think BG series when thinking 'nice items'. You'll have to wait some time before getting any 'named' items (There's not that many, you know). Masterwork and magic items are by far the 'nice items' of ToEE.

    6. yes. Any action considered evil or non-lawfull well probably turn you ex (Guess the count for clerks's too, hasn't tried though).
    *SPOILER*
Working for the elemental temples in the Temple of Elemental Evil WILL earn your paladin the neat tittle of 'Fallen'. :/

    9. I think that detect magic will work as identification on scrolls. I could very well remember wrong here.

    11. *SPOILER* On the 2nd floor of the Church of St. Cuthberd there is a bookcase (Right next to the stairs). You can loot this for a scroll of Heal.

    12. *SPOILER* Talk to the prist on the 1st floor and tell him that you want to speak with the head cleric. For a minor donation (10 gp or so), you can speak with the chief Cleric, Terjon. He's the one you need to talk to regarding conversions.

    Thanks for the speedy response.

    11. Okay, I get that, but is it possible that looting the church might cause a LN or LG Cleric to fall?

    12. I've done that, actually, but I still can't seem to make any headway. I'm considering playing over again, so maybe that will clear things up.

    11. Nope. None will bother about you robing their church :p .

    12. It's quite some time since I last played ToEE. *SPOILER* But as far as I recall, having helped the Millers assistant with converting to St. Cuthbert will give you an extra reply option, where you can say something like: I got him converted for you. Anyways, I believe there are some more people whom you can help convert to st. Cuthbert (Or it's just that one), this will ease Terjon up, and give you the reply option mentioned above, thus allowing you to complete the quest. (A lot of the quest are quite screwed up imho).

    4. Looting problem still persist (I can't loot the goblin in Hommlet or the bandits outside the moathouse). I have gotten the three official patches, so either I haven't done something right or it's time to get the unofficial one. Thanks again.

    12. Finished the quest - thanks!

Let me say first, that this game is great once you fix it with all available patches. Obviously, it could have been better, but it was rushed and lots of cuts were made. Level 19 limit and the monsters you face at the end?!? SPOILER .... take on the Gods. But hopefully you found it in the discount bin and you will get several hours of good game play. Once you master the play system, which I think is the high point of the game and realize it is a low magic world (but you can solve this, see below). Now to your questions:
    1. Bards have armored arcana feat, so light armor does not cause spell failure. Bards are rather weak in this game due to level limit, whether single or multi classes, but play what you like, anything will work.
    2. Yes, just like clerics, druids get animal summoning.
    3. Yes, lots of crap out there, but in p&p, you would be looking at all those areas anyway, wouldn't you. They wanted a P&P feel to the game, just didn't have enough time to get there.
    4. As posted above, get the 2 patches and I recommend the Co8 patch for game play and game balance. See below #7. You really are not missing much on random encounters, but if you are like me, any $$ could help. Plus, I outfitted all my chars with pick ups to start, since everything is too expensive to buy. I used all my cash to get my cleric plate armor, to keep her alive, only to find in 15 mins later on some guards.
    5. Its a low magic game, which I liked. Limited magic weapons and items for a 3rd level party, just like it should be. BG and IWD went a little overboard IMO, but ya gotta keep the buyers happy :) .
    6. No on cleric. Probably would have if they could have completed the game as planned. Surprisingly, nothing on monk either, just paladin. I think it adds to game play.
    7. Get the Co8 patch!!! It add MW weapons to one of the merchants. This adds all weapons listed in the manuel, whick you cannot find anywhere in the game!! Why list them if you can't play them. By the way, keep the scythe, its the best weapon in the game. 4X crit, 18-20. With improved critical, your fighter will be Death delivered!
    8. Heal skill only for dying companions, which is handy if your cleric is dying and you know healing potions are limited early in the game. Have a couple put modest points into it early, then don't worry about it.
    9. Detect magic, I believe only works in your inventory, so yes you do have to pick all that junk up, but you were going to sell it anyway, even if it is worth 1CP, he hee.
    10. I think she is in the southern village. Learn to use the overhead maps and the flagging system. I listed each inhabitant on a flag, until I solved there problems, as you are limited in the # of flags you can use, and Homlett is concider one map, even if it is 3 areas.
    11.. Solved in post above.
    12. You have to go back and forth between the Clerics of St Cuth and the High druid. Yes, pain in the arse, but you didn't think there would be no fetch and carry side quests did ya?
    13. Y & N. Weapon size does matter, but not armor size. I believe small chars have penalty with med size weapons, unless using them 2handed. May need to check that one. Once again, I think the developers wanted to implement size system, but just couldn't get it all in the game in time.

Hope this helps, if you need more help or more details, let me know.

I believe I've installed patches 1, 2, and the two Circle of Eight patches (as recommended by olimikrig's link), and everything appears to be fine except that I can only loot bodies during combat. I had to, in the last battle, keep one brigand alive so my PC's could scurry around and pick up the remaining gold and crossbow bolts.

That's really weird. I've had some looting probs before, but patching has always solved these problems for me :S

I'm thinking it may have just been faulty install. I am not very good with computers.

    But still -

@ Oaz. i have the same problem. You can loot during combat mode though, so when you finish a fight, just press "c" to re-enter combat mode. Unfortunately, you have to do this for each body, but it does allow you to pick stuff up.

Actually, I believe I have the problem fixed, but I didn't know about the "C" key. Thanks.
