I am playing SOU/HOTU with a human bard that has a couple levels in fighter. I want to start adding Red Dragon Disciple levels. But I think I mucked it with adding the fighter levels early on. Does a prestige class also count towards the experience penalty? So if I have a human bard lvl 10, fighter lvl 2 and red dragon lvl 4, I will get the 20% XP penalty because the two sub classes are not equal? I hope prestige classes are exempt, but I doubt it :(

I can confirm that prestige classes are exempt when calculating multiclassing XP penalties. Hooray!

Thank You Thank You Thank You

Now I can run the game again and do my level up to lvl 1 Red Dragon Disciple

PS is there some place in the game that it says you are getting an XP penalty when your classes are unbalanced?

I think it tells you in the same place as it shows the XP.

The only time this is a problem is with the shifter -- because the game changes your class to the creature. A minotaur's preferred class is minotaur an X level shifter becomes an X level minotaur. So if you have another class other than druid, those classes must be with one level of each other or you take the 20% xp penalty. It doesn't matter if you are a dwarf druid/fighter/shifter -- once you shift you are no longer a dwarf and fighter is no longer your preferred class (and you are subject to the penalty).
